History in the making! Colonia drops Montville, 67-57, in Group 3 semis to clinch first ever state finals berth

The Colonia boys’ basketball program has eleven state championships. They’ve won the last five North Jersey, Section 2, Group 3 titles. But the one thing they hadn’t done – whether it was 1973, 1994, 2015 or 2025 – was make a state final.

But now, you can check that box off as well.

Colonia – after starting the season 2-6 – now is 21-10, after a 67-57 win over North 1, Group 3 champion Montville at the Dunn Center in Elizabeth Tuesday, as heard live on Central Jersey Sports Radio.

And now they get one more game, at Rutgers for the state Group 3 title.

They’ll face South Jersey Group 3 champion Ocean City Sunday afternoon at 2 pm at Jersey Mike’s Arena in Piscataway for all the marbles. The Red Raiders were 56-43 winners over Westhampton Tech in the other Group 3 semi down at Central Regional in Bayville Wednesday evening.

Colonia got out to a 9-0 lead early in the game, and that might have been the turning point. That’s because the teams played fairly even the rest of the way, with the Patriots up seven after one, 33-24 at the half, and 51-41 at the end of three. Colonia never trailed in the game, and never allowed Montville to make a run.

Well, almost.

Montville did get the lead down to five at one point late, down 62-57 around the two-minute mark, but Colonia helped itself immensely at the free throw line as senior twins Joey and Ricky Beyer both got in foul trouble in the fourth quarter, Joey fouling out with under a minute left. Big man Eddie Camaj also had four fouls down the stretch.

But the Patriots made them pat from the stripe. Sophomore Jayce Rodriguez finished with a game-high 27, but he had 13 early in the third – his final made field goal coming from beyond the arc – before his last 14 points came from the foul line, where he was a perfect 14-for-14.

As a team, Colonia was 22-of-24 from the foul line, virtually unheard of at any level, let alone a pressure-packed state semifinal.

Rodriguez has three triples, as did senior Dylan Chiera, who finished with 20 points.

Montville finished its season at 23-6; junior David Gonzalez had a team-high 14, while Camaj finished with 12, ten in the second half.

Gameday with Marcus Borden: Week 2

Now that high school football is in full swing, things are really starting to heat up in the Big Central and around the state, so let’s talk about it all with Central Jersey Sports Radio analyst Marcus Borden!

Mike and Marcus look back at the week gone by, including Aidan Vesuvio-Bush and Somerville’s win over Cranford, Bernards’ two-day win at Hillside, and then look ahead to this week’s matchups, which sees the fourth-ranked Mountaineers face Delaware Valley in a battle of 2-0 teams in the “Big Central Game of the Week” presented by Bellamy & Son Paving. Then, Marcus will be at another big clash in Flemington between unbeatens Hunterdon Central and Phillipsburg, before traveling to Metuchen Saturday for a small-school meeting between the Bulldogs and Roselle.

Also on the show, Mike and Marcus discuss similarities between the Week 0 and Week 1 “Bellamy & Son Paving Players of the Week,” the mindset of kickers who also play on offense, and the most scenic high school football stadium in the Big Central!

With his arm, and foot, Colonia’s Dylan Chiera takes home Week 1 Bellamy & Son Paving Player of the Week honors

To be honored as a Player of the Week, Month, or Year, it often requires going above and beyond, sometimes playing – and succeeding, obviously – at more than one position.

Well, for the second week in a row, the Bellamy & Son Paving Player of the Week is a position player who also played a key role in the kicking game.

In Week Zero, it was Dillon Nunes of Watchung Hills, who put his team ahead of Moorestown a field goal, then sealed the win with a third-down interception on defense with the game on the line.

This week, it’s Dylan Chiera of Colonia.

The senior – also a member of the 2025 GMC Tournament and five-time defending North 2, Group 3 champion basketball team – had quite the game at quarterback, almost enough to win it there. He was 14-of-21 passing for 182 yards and two touchdowns.

But that still only had his team tied in the fourth quarter of last Friday night’s home game with North Hunterdon, 21-21. So, a little past the midway point of the fourth quarter, after a drive stalled, he put a foot on the ball instead of throwing it.

That 28-yard field goal gave Colonia a 24-21 lead they held on to, giving the Patriots their first win of the season.

Colonia is back in action Friday night at 6:00 when Linden (0-2) comes to play on the blue turf.

The Bellamy & Son Paving Player of the Week is chosen from nominees by Big Central coaches. At the end of the season, one player will be chosen to receive a $500 scholarship courtesy of Bellamy & Son Paving. As always, we will recognize selected “Honorable Mentions,” and recognize all other all nominees in our weekly story.

Honorable Mentions:

  • Jackson Babiarz, Dayton: In a 21-6 win at South Hunterdon, he had a 27-yard touchdown catch, two interceptions, four total tackles in the secondary, and had two kickoffs go for touchbacks. He had two of the Bulldogs’ three takeaways on defense, and sparked a big second quarter in which Dayton scored all 21 of its points.
  • A.J. Whitehead, New Providence: The senior runningback was critical in a 42-7 season-opening win at Governor Livingston Saturday, heard on Central Jersey Sports Radio. He went for 68 yards on 14 carries with two rushing touchdowns, but didn’t stop there. Whitehead also had a 62-yard pick-six and a 55-yard punt return for a fourth touchdown. Oh, and he had another punt return called back!
  • Sam Dech, Phillipsburg: While the senior runningback’s 18 carries, 219 yards and three touchdowns may look like a pedestrian performance by the end of the season, this kid doesn’t do anything without going all the way. And he nearly did that, with a 95-yard touchdown in a 28-0 season-opening win at Westfield, setting two school records: longest rush and longest touchdown run in school history. And there’s a lot of history in Phillipsburg!
  • Aidan Vesuvio-Bush, Somerville: The Pioneer senior “put the team on his back,” Friday night in a 28-12 home win over Cranford, says head coach Matt Bloom. The runningback carried 26 times for 182 yards and three touchdowns – his longest from 42 yards out – and also had three catches for 23 yards, a two-point conversion, and two kick returns, including a 53-yarder.
  • Matteo Tramutola, Voorhees: The senior runningback – crowned the Higgins Speed Lab “Speedster of the Week” for Week One – was tops in the Big Central in Week One on the ground, going for 224 yards and four touchdowns on 24 carries in a 43-13 road win at JFK. He also caught two passes for 37 yards, while logging six tackles on defense, including a “devastating” one , according to head coach John Hack, which he says “set the tone” for a dominating second half. Tramutola finished with six tackles, and also had two punts, averaging over 40 yards.

Other Notable Performances:

  • Logan Stevens, Bernards: In a two-day affair that finished Saturday, which Bernards won at Hillside, 24-14, Stevens carried 20 times for 130 yards, and had three catches for 33 yards, scoring twice. He had eight tackles at defensiveback as well, including a touchdown-saving stop at the five-yard line; he then came up with two critical goal-line tackles as well to keep the Comets off the board, and extend the Mountaineers’ state-best 27-game regular season winning streak.
  • Jake Markey, Bound Brook: The senior runningback was instrumental in a 43-28 home win over JP Stevens Friday night. He carried 26 times, a workhorse for 128 yards and a touchdown. And from his linebacker position, Markey had seven total tackles.
  • Ronelle Nimneh, Carteret: The senior linebacker was a monster on defense in a 28-2 win at Perth Amboy Friday, heard on Central Jersey Sports Radio. He had 12 total tackles, 11 solo, and recorded four TFLs and two sacks, and also had a 10-yard rushing touchdown, despite never getting a preseason carry – not in practice, or a scrimmage!
  • Kelton Ibach, Delaware Valley: The senior signal-caller was 14-of-22 passing for 256 yards and two touchdowns, also adding 19 rushing yards on five carries in a 26-0 home win over South Plainfield.
  • Andrew Schwarz, Hillsborough: In a 20-13 win over Union, the senior runningback ran for 190 yards on 23 carries, scoring touchdowns of 39 (on the third play of the game, to set the tone) and 64 yards, which put the Raiders ahead for good in the third quarter. He also had a catch for nine yards, and at linebacker had two tackles.
  • Reggie Osae-Aye, Hunterdon Central: The kid keeps putting up big numbers. In a 41-13 win over Monroe, he rushed for 197 yards and four touchdowns. He’s a big reason why the Red Devils are 2-0 and made their debut this week in the Bellamy & Son Paving Top Ten at No. 7.
  • Jordan Burnett, North Plainfield: In a 19-13 home win over Belvidere, he carried 22 times for 167 yards and two touchdowns. With the score tied in the fourth quarter, he led the go-ahead drive with six carries, capping it off with a one-yard TD scamper for the win.
  • Brody Nugent, Old Bridge: The senior quarterback continues to be red hot. This week, in a 28-6 win over Edison, he threw for 202 yards and two touchdowns, while also rushing for 64 and another score. He also had an interception on defense.
  • Andrew Avent, Rahway: The senior runningback carried 19 times for 171 yards and three touchdowns – of 53, nine and two yards – in a 35-7 win at Scotch Plains-Fanwood on Friday. He also had two punts for 42 yards, and on defense, at linebacker, had five solo tackles, three assists and two TFLs.
  • Anthony Damiano, Roselle Park: In a 45-13 win over Middlesex, the senior QB rushed for a 12-yard touchdown and threw for a 20-yarder, while also picking off a pass from his outside linebacker position that he brought to the house, 53-yards for a third touchdown.
  • Se’mir Tolbert-Brimage, Spotswood: In a 31-8 home win over Roselle on Friday, the senior QB carried 17 times for 123 yard and a touchdown, but also slung it for 83 yards on 6-of-10 passing with another touchdown. At defensive end, he has two tackles, and two pass breakups.
  • Alex Schwark, Summit: The senior quarterback did it mainly with his feet in this one: 14 carries, 201 yards and four touchdowns – his second straight 200-yard game – in a 31-28 win at Montgomery. He was also 2-of-4 passing for 66 yards, including a huge completion on their field goal drive in the third quarter that gave them enough wiggle-room to survive a fourth-quarter Cougar touchdown.

Late Colonia TD drive in “Bragging Rights Trophy” with Woodbridge is Week 2 Chris’ Auto Body “Drive of the Week”

Thanks to our newest sponsor, Chris’ Auto Body of Lambertville and New Hope, we have a new segment this football season on Central Jersey Sports Radio: “The Chris’ Auto Body Drive of the Week.”

Each week, we’ll pick the best drive from the previous weekend’s games, as shot by our high school football analyst Marcus Borden. And you’ll be able to watch the drive right here on cjsportsradio.com.

This week, it’s Colonia. The Patriots were down ten at home late in the fourth quarter to Woodbridge, but put together a solid drive, led by QB Dylan Chiera’s aerial attack and two nice grabs by RJ Wortman to cut the lead to 42-39. But Woodbridge would ultimately hold on for a 42-39 win.

Chiera’s overtime TD run earns Colonia junior the first Bellamy & Son Paving Player of the Week honors of the 2024 season

Colonia’s Jaeden Jones finished up his football career with a playoff berth earned on Cutoff Weekend, and the final Bellamy & Son Paving Player of the Week honors in 2023. Then, he handed he reins to junior Dylan Chiera.

And while Cutoff Weekend is still quite far down the road, Chiera has literally taken the baton and run with it. Not only is he the Patriots’ quarterback this season – taking over as a junior like Jones did two years ago – but he’s also going to have a Bellamy & Son football with his name on it, picking up the honor for Week Zero here in 2024.

Chiera scored on a 12-yard touchdown run in overtime to tie their season-opening battle at 20, then senior Anthony Garofalo put the exclamation point on it with the PAT, giving the Patriots a “walkoff” win in Bomber Country.

Chiera is a different type of quarterback that Jones, who – like Josh Oluremi before him, was always looking to run. Not so with Chiera, but it gives Colonia a different dimension than they’ve had the last several seasons.

Colonia is back in action Friday night at North Hunterdon.

  • Nyekir Eato, Edison: The senior excelled in all three phases of a 27-0 shutout of East Brunswick. Eato carried 19 times for 137 yards on offense, scoring three times. He also had a 90-yard kickoff return for a touchdown on special teams, and picked off three passes on defense.
  • Na’quavere Thomas, Manville: They call him “Junior,” but there’s nothing small about this senior’s game. In a 28-7 home win over Keyport Friday, he ran for 122 yards and two touchdowns on 19 carries, as well as a 39-yard catch early that set the Mustangs up at the goal line. At defensive tackle, he racked up ten tackles, five solo, and three for loss, including a six-yard sack. He also forced two fumbles.
  • Jahai Johnson, Piscataway: The senior wide receiver – guarded by double- and triple-teams all night, had only two catches for 24 yard,s but contributed in other ways. Out of the wildcat formation, he carried twice, scoring both times, including a 55-yard TD score with 2:19 to go in the game that clinched the victory.
  • Josiah Zayas, St. Thomas Aquinas: Down 29-0 at the half to Mount St. Joseph of Maryland down at the Mid-Atlantic Pigskin Classic in Wilmington, the junior helped lead a second half rally that just fell short in what turned out to be a 36-26 loss. Zayas finished with six catches for 111 yards, including an 18-yard TD catch, as well as two interceptions on the defensive side of the field.

Other Notable Performances:

  • Logan Stevens, Bernards: The junior runningback carried four times for 65 yards and two scores, while adding two catches for another 71 and a touchdown out of the backfield, en route to a 35-6 win over Monmouth Regional on Thursday. He scored three times on just six touches!
  • Andrew Avent, Rahway: The junior was a busy young man in a 41-14 win over Voorhees on Thursday. At runningback, he had 16 carries for 145 yards and two touchdowns, as well as a two-point conversion run. He also had one punt for 40 yards, and on defense, recorded seven solo tackles, 2 TFLs, and and an 18-yard scoop-and-score for a touchdown.
  • Dubem Kawah, Franklin: The junior runningback scored two touchdowns and ran for 101 yards on just seven carries, averaging 14.4 yards per trip in a 26-20 win over Trenton on Friday.
  • Arique Fleming, Elizabeth: The sophomore – now in his second year as starting QB for the Minutemen – looked the part in a 35-18 win over Linden. He threw 14-for-19 for 190 yards and a touchdown, but also ran the ball effectively. He carried ten times for 95 yards and another score.
  • Brayden Kelly, Watchung Hills: The senior wide receiver and defensive back was busy on both sides of the ball. On offense, he had five catches for 120 yards, one of them going 56 yards for a score. Then, he had five tackles, two for a loss, while also picking off a pass.
  • Brandon Bradsher, Perth Amboy: In a 27-9 win at JFK Thursday evening, the senior had three catches for 150 yards and two touchdowns (of 75 and 82 yards), while also logging an interception on defense.
  • Gio Veliz, Hunterdon Central: The junior runningback was a workhorse for the Red Devils in a 42-14 win at North Hunterdon Saturday. He carried 21 times for 156 yards and three touchdowns in the win.
  • Terrell Mitchell, Somerville: The Pioneers got 15 carries for 66 yards out of Mitchell, a senior runningback who’ll be headed to Wake Forest next year. He had an 11-yard touchdown run and an 11-yard touchdown catch, both in the first half of a 21-20 home win over Hillsborough. He had seven catchers overall for 57 yards.
  • Kamari Toney, South Brunswick: The sophomore running back looked like anything but a sophomore making his first-ever varsity start Friday in a 30-13 win at Robbinsville, which earned new head coach Ibrahim Halsey his first win with the Vikings. He carried 12 times for 138 yards and a touchdown in the victory.
  • Derek Anderson, Woodbridge: The senior quarterback was 10-of-19 passing for 183 yards and three touchdowns – one of which went for 60 yards – along with a 12 yard score on the ground in his first game playing a new-look offense under new head coach Joe Goerge. The results was a good one for the Barrons: a 36-34 win at Old Bridge.
  • Jayden Richards, Scotch Plains-Fanwood: The junior carried 20 times for 122 yards and a touchdown in a hard-fought 31-30 home loss to Monroe on Thursday night.
