Middlesex will look to whole team to replace key parts as Blue Jays open 2025 at Spotswood

Middlesex football coach Bobby Swercheck was hired to coach the Blue Jays in 2024 in June of last year, which didn’t give him a lot of time with the team before preseason camp. Yet, they went 6-4 and made the playoffs.

This year may be an even bigger challenge.

There is not much returning in terms of pure statistics. Over 1,000 passing yards and nearly 900 rushing yards from quarterback Dom Parenti are gone to graduation. Jax Jarvis and his more than 900 yards combined receiving and rushing are gone. A total of 79 rushing yards and 371 receiving yards remain.

The cupboard is hardly bare, just figuring out how it all will work is the challenge.

There are some good pieces, though. Junior Julian Samuels is the top returning offensive player, statistically, with 371 yards and three scores on the receiving end. He also had 71 rushing yards.

Marcus Lavronia and Dominic Long – both excellent on the 2025 Group 1 state title baseball team – will contribute on offense, and bring a championship mindset. And Swercheck likes his quarterback, Matthew Petti, Jr., even if he is just a sophomore.

Defensively, it’s much of the same story. The Jays expect some growing pains, but also success, as they play physical and swarm to the football.

All that will be needed in order to come out with a win on Week Zero, when Middlesex opens the season at Spotswood in the Big Central Game of the Week presented by Bellamy & Son Paving. Gameday with Marcus Borden: Week 0

The 2025 high school football season begins today, and it’s time to talk about it with Marcus Borden!

The majority of Big Central Conference teams open up this weekend, and we talk about our Bellamy & Son Paving Big Central Game of the Week, featuring Spotswood at Middlesex in the Chargers’ first game with their brand-new lights.

Also on the show, Coach Borden talks about the games he’ll be covering this weekend down at the Battles at the Beach, with Hillsborough taking on Washington Township on Friday, then Old Bridge battling Cedar Creek on Saturday, both at Rowan University in Glassboro. We also take a quick look back at the 2025 Big Central Camp Caravan, talk about the big numbers out for Dunellen football, and some other key Week Zero games around the league!

With a ton of skill players back, veteran-heavy Spotswood looks to get off on the right foot when Chargers host Middlesex in ’25 opener

Quarterback Se’mir Tolbert-Brimage has evolved in his role as a leader. Sebastian “Seb” Saracino will run the rock and act as one-man tackle machine on defense. And Gavin Pereira is virtually automatic on PATs, with good length on field goals.

Yes, Spotswood football – even after back-to-back division championships and 8-2 seasons – could be poised for even greater heights in 2025.

That all starts Thursday night, when the Chargers host Middlesex for the first time since the COVID season of 2020, and in their first game under their brand-new set of lights. You can hear the Bellamy & Son Paving Big Central Game of the Week on Central Jersey Sports Radio at 7 pm, with pregame set for 6:45. Mike Pavlichko will call all the action with guest color commentator Ben LaSala, the former AD and football coach at Colonia who has been the Vice President of the League since its beginning. Spotswood and Middlesex were frequent opponents in the days of Greater Middlesex Conference football. That changed with the advent of the Big Central Conference in 2020, and this Week Zero meeting will be their first since.

Chargers’ head coach Chris Meagher and Middlesex skipper Bobby Swercheck are good friends, having both coached together as assistants at North Brunswick. Not at the same time, but they were both teachers in the district for several years, and came to know each other that way.

Both were looking for a competitive game to open the season with, and it seemed like a perfect fit.

The Blue Jays have some question marks at some skill positions, but still should be competitive this season with a scrappy group of kids, some of whom also happen to play on the Middlesex baseball team, which won a state title in Group 1 this past Spring.

Marcus Borden’s 2025 Camp Caravan: Manville and Spotswood scrimmage at Metuchen

Central Jersey Sports Radio high school football analyst Marcus Borden continued Week Two of his 2025 Big Central Camp Caravan with a visit to a quad scrimmage at Metuchen, which welcomed fellow BCC squads Manville and Spotswood, along with Point Pleasant Beach out of the Shore Conference.

Below is a list of teams, players and coaches from the August 19, 2025 quad scrimmage at Metuchen High School:

2025 Big Central Preview: Freedom Gold Division

Since we worked our way from the Group 5 schools down to the Group 1 last year, Central Jersey Sports Radio will start our 2025 division previews with the some small school love, beginning with the Freedom Gold and Silver, then the Patriot, and running all the way up to the Group 5 divisions.

In the Freedom Gold, Spotswood is coming off its second straight 8-2 season, and second straight division title under head coach Chris Meagher, whose team should again, at the very least, compete for the title.

Last year at this time, Highland Park was coming off a one-win season, but a big win. It came over Point Pleasant Beach and was the Owls’ first victory since 2016. A year later? They are coming off a 6-3 campaign, and still have talent, despite the loss of quarterback Markos Hantsoulis to graduation.

Dayton won four games last year, but finished red-hot, winning three of their last four. Roselle Park and South River will look to make inroads, after each won three games last season.

And Brearley has some renewed enthusiasm after a winless season last year, but also has a new coach in Elliot Platt.

Spotswood keeps it in the family, as ex-EB coach Andy Steinfeld joins his son, Matt, as assistant with the Chargers

Chris Meagher believes “he hit a home run” by adding former East Brunswick head football coach Andy Steinfeld to the Chargers coaching staff.

With 31 years of coaching football, five as a head coach, Steinfeld joins his son Matt, affectionately called “Coach Stein” by the Chargers’ players and staff.

Matt Steinfeld enters his fourth season with Spotswood and is a guidance counselor at the high school. He did not play football in high school, but he was a member of the baseball team at East Brunswick.

His first year at Spotswood he was offered a position with the football program and made a smooth transition learning the subtleties of the game while possessing a genuine care for the student athletes he would be coaching or advising for the Chargers.

Now, with the addition of his father to the coaching staff, Matt’s quarterbacks will spend plenty of time meshing with the running backs as Meagher intends to use “Coach Steinfeld” as his running backs coach, while Andy has plenty of experience with the zone read offense.

With returning quarterback Senior Se’mir Tolbert-Brimage orchestrating the offense and Senior Sebastian Saracino, a three-year starter at running back, the Steinfelds will play an integral role in the team’s offensive development and success.

Furthermore, Spotswood’s mentor intends to utilize his most experienced assistant coach in the press box on game day as he will be “my eyes in the sky,” since Andy brings a wealth of knowledge, which includes playing for championships in December.

As for Matt, he will be on the sidelines as the Special Teams Coordinator, with the responsibility of getting the correct personnel on the field when needed in a timely fashion. He will also have time to personally talk to his quarterbacks as they come off the field about any reads or adjustments needed for the offense.

When asked about how unique this opportunity was to coach with his father, Coach Stein said “I may not have the words right now, but one day we are going to look back on this and it’s going to be cool. I get to coach with the man I idolized growing up.”

For Andy, it was a no-brainer to accept the offer to coach at Spotswood for several reasons. They are a talented team with plenty of experience and the desire to take the program to new heights, but more importantly, it was the chance to coach with his son.

“There is nothing better than working every day with my son. To see him coach a sport he didn’t play, I can be a proud dad and if I can end my career as a coach doing it with Matt, there is not a better situation for me personally.”

As the season gets underway in earnest on August 11, the Chargers will have a practice run with the experienced eyes of Coach Steinfeld in the press box as they take on South Plainfield in a final tune-up before their season opener at home on Thursday August 28 at 7 p.m.

Early look at Big Central Football 2025: Crowded Freedom Gold returns with GMC stalwarts Spotswood, Highland Park leading the way

Based on recent success, Spotswood’s sweep of the Freedom Gold Division in 2024 didn’t come as a shock to anyone who follows Big Central Football, but boy was Highland Park a pleasant surprise after breaking the state’s longest active losing streak of 51 games in 2023.

The Owls finished second in the six team division, going 6-3 overall, 4-1 in the division – their only loss to the Chargers – en route to their best season since going 6-4 in 2016, the last time they’d won a game until they closed their season two years ago with a 46-29 win at Point Pleasant Beach. Spotswood was very good, as well, and both very well could be at or near the top of the division in 2025. The question is, who will join them? Can South River, Roselle Park or Dayton make inroads? And can Brearley get back in the game after an 0-10 season with a very young club, but just two years removed from an undefeated regular season and a trip to a sectional final?

Here are the preliminary schedules for the Freedom Gold Division teams – in alphabetical order – compiled from the official league schedule and other online sources to the best of our knowledge. Eliott Platt takes over at Brearley, coming over from immaculata, where he was the defensive line coach. A Montclair-Kimberley alum, Platt will be looking to snap a 12-game skid to start the season with a Bergen County foe in Wallington before the BCC schedule kicks in with back-to-back road games. The offense should produce more with the return of QB Joe Squarillo for his senior year. The Bears didn’t throw much, but all 1,449 rushing yards return. In fact, every single skill position player on offense is back for Brearley. The defense had just a single senior as well, and the baptism-by-fire experience should pay dividends this fall.

Dayton Bulldogs (4-6, 2-3, tied for 3rd with Roselle Park, South River in ’24)
Head Coach: Nick Iannacone (11-18, 4th season)

The Bulldogs finished strong last season, winning three of their last four games after a 1-5 start. They’ll be hurt by the loss of John John DeSarno, who threw for 1,2888 yards and ten touchdowns as a senior, and the other skill positions will be young, too. Defensively, defensive back Chidiogo Iherobiem could have a big senior year, after recording a sack, six TFLs, a fumble recovery and a pair of pick-sixes last season.

Highland Park Owls (6-4, 4-1, 2nd place in ’24)

Being 7-29 in four seasons never looked so good. What a joy to see joy in Highland Park again, in its best season in nearly a decade. While the graduation of QB Markos Hantsoulis – with 984 pass yards, nine touchdowns, and a team-leading 583 rushing yards – will leave a mark, there’s still some Hantsoulis blood left; receivers Kosta (350 yards, 5 TDs) and Stamatis (76 yards, 1 TD) will be back for their senior years, and Kaseem Qualls has the skills to make an impact, too. Whether they can finish 6-3 again will be a challenge, but the Owls should be in the thick of things again this year. Losing can be contagious, but so is winning.

Roselle Park Panthers (3-7, 2-3, tied for 3rd with Dayton, South River in ’24)
Head Coach: Greg Dunkerton (17-31, 6th season)

Starting QB Anthony Damiano (466 yards, 3 TD) and top runningback Anthony Cianfrocca (893 yards, 6 TD) should be back for their senior seasons, and they’ll rely on the run game again, having rushed just one shy of 2,200 yards last season and 16 touchdowns. On the defensive side, Damiano once again will be a defensive stalwart. Hr had two sacks, a TFL and a forced fumble last year, and will be one of few returnees from a senior-laden unit. The Rams should bounce back this year after back-to-back five-plus in seasons.

South River Rams (3-7, 2-3, tied for 3rd with Dayton, Roselle Park in ’24)
Head Coach: Rich Marchesi (228-149, 39th season)

Last year was a bit of a bounce-back for the Rams, who were winless in 2023 before winning three games last season, including their finale against Dunellen. And while South River will lose senior receiver Aiden Velez (765 yards and 7 TDs), every other major contributor at the skill positions is back, including QB Orion Familia (41-72, 478 yards, 8 TDs) and No. 2 runningback Kah’mori Cotto. The Sophomore went for 525 yards on 135 carries – tops on the team – and scored three touchdowns. They will, however, miss Coach Marchesi’s son, Michael, who led the team with four sacks last year, and was second on the team in tackles. Rising seniors Jake Dehner (DL) and Filipe Granadiero (LB) could help take up the slack.

With back-to-back eight-win seasons under their belt, and a ton of talent back, expect the Chargers to contend for yet another division title under Chris Meagher, who – after a 1-8 debut season – turned things around, and they haven’t won fewer than seven the last three seasons. They’ll open up with perhaps their biggest adjustment – playing night games under their brand new lights entertaining Middlesex on a Thursday. Dual-threat quarterback Se’mir Tolbert-Brimage (791 yards, 10 TDs passing; 638 yards, 11 TDs rushing) is back, and so is No. 1 rusher Sebastian Saracino (692 yards, 5 TDs). Their top receiver returns, too; Ryan Foster grabbed 28 passes for 418 yards and 4 TDs a year ago, while junior Vinny Young (129 yards, 2 TD) as back as well. Tolbert-Brimage and Saracino also will be key on defense. Other highlights include senior Julian Sanchez (three fumble recoveries last year as a junior) and DL Dan Keelan (1 sack, 7 TFLs, 1 fumble recovery last season).

Somerset County champion Immaculata rises to No. 1, GMC champ St. Joe’s to No. 2 in Week 8 Bellamy & Son Paving Top Ten

The completion of the two county tournaments in the Central Jersey Sports Radio coverage area gives us new teams at No. 1 and No. 2 in the Week 8 Bellamy & Son Paving High School Baseball Top Ten.

Somerset County Tournament winner Immaculata (17-5) retakes the top spot from Ridge for the first time since Week 1, when they wrested the top spot away from Bridgewater-Raritan after an Opening Day win and opening week sweep over the Panthers. The Spartans were 4-0 this week, with a win over Franklin, 1-0, in the Somerset County Tournament semifinals – on a no-hitter by Ryan Auten – and Wednesday in the title game, 3-0 over Ridge. They also won non-conference games Tuesday against North Brunswick, 7-3, and at West Morris on Saturday, 4-1, outscoring their four opponents 19-4 during the week.

Red hot St. Joseph-Metuchen (15-6) takes the second spot, going 2-0 in the week gone by and continuing to win games late. After beating Spotswood last Saturday in the Jim Muldowney GMC Championship Tournament semifinals, 4-3 in walkoff fashion, Joe’s began the week with a 2-1 eight-inning win at Westfield, breaking a 1-1 tie in the top of the eighth. It was their eighth straight win, and fifth in a row in their last at bat. But the ultimate topper was Saturday, when they trailed 4-2 heading into their final at bat in the bottom of the seventh, got one run to cut it to 4-3, then won the GMC crown 7-3 on a walkoff grand slam by JP Zayle. The Falcons won all four of their GMCT games in walk-off fashion.

Ridge (17-5) falls to third, on a 2-1 week. They beat Rutgers Prep Monday, 11-0, in the Somerset County Tournament semifinals, then lost to Immaculata 3-0 in the title game Wednesday. The Red Devils rebounded with a 7-1 win Friday at Chatham.

Holding in fourth is Edison (13-9), which won its eighth and ninth straight games with a Monday victory at Carteret, 7-3, and an 8-1 win at Somerville on Tuesday. But that streak got snapped in dramatic fashion Saturday, when St. Joseph beat them to win the Jim Muldowney GMC Championship with a 7-4 walkoff.

Rutgers Prep (13-9) went 2-1 in the past week and holds in fifth. After a Monday loss to Ridge, 11-0, in the SCT semifinals, they rebounded with a Tuesday 7-3 win at Princeton Day, and a 7-4 win at Millburn on Saturday.

Holding at No. 6 is Middlesex (17-5), which went 2-0 in the week gone by. The Blue Jays beat two Union County teams at home this week via shutout: Scotch Plains-Fanwood 1-0 on Tuesday, and Union 2-0 on Friday.

Colonia (20-4) moves up two spots to No. 7, becoming the first team from the CJSR coverage area to reach 20 wins this season. (The next closest teams are Ridge and Middlesex, with 17 each.) The Patriots went 3-0 in the week gone by, with a 1-0 win at rival Woodbridge on Monday, a 7-3 home victory over Bloomfield Wednesday, and a 10-0 win over Carteret at home on Thursday.

South Plainfield (14-10) drops a spot to No. 8, splitting two games this week. The Tigers won at Dayton on Tuesday, 6-1, but came back with a 10-5 loss at Elizabeth on Friday.

Also splitting two games last week was Spotswood (15-10), which dropped to nine. The Chargers got blanked 6-0 by Monroe at The Swamp on Tuesday, but rebounded with at 8-3 home win over Ewing on Wednesday.

And holding at No. 10 is Woodbridge (16-7), which went 1-2 this week and has gone 3-3 in its last six games. The Barrons dropped a 1-0 home decision to Colonia on Monday, rebounded with a 3-2 win at JFK to complete their township series Tuesday, then lost Friday at Perth Amboy, 4-3.

Wide-open GMC Tournament roils Bellamy & Son Paving Top Ten in Week 7 from third on down

We all knew the GMC Tournament would be a wide open event this year, but now it’s wreaked havoc on the Bellamy & Son Paving Top Ten for Week Seven. The top two teams – Ridge and Immaculata – are unchanged, but everyone else shuffled. Three teams dropped out and two new teams entered. (Two teams were tied for 10th last week.)

Ridge (15-4) is at No. 1, but a lot could be said about that Monday afternoon when the top-seeded Red Devils take on fourth-seed Rutgers Prep in the Somerset County Tournament semifinals at TD Bank Park at 4 pm. Ridge won its only game last week, 7-1 over Bernards in the quarterfinals, and won an earlier meeting with the Argonauts this year, 8-6, on April 19th. Immaculata (12-7) lost two of three last week, but won their Wednesday SCT quarterfinal, 10-9 over Hillsborough, rallying from three runs down in the seventh to walk it off without the benefit of a hit. They dropped a Monday decision, 11-10, to DePaul, then fell Thursday to Somerville 6-5, but they second-seeded Spartans are back in action in the SCT Monday at 1 pm taking on 11th-seed and upset-minded Franklin. But from here on out, it gets messy.

St. Joseph-Metuchen (13-6) makes its debut at No. 3, after reaching the GMC Tournament final with a walkoff win against Spotswood Saturday, 4-3 in the semis. The cardiac kids had a 3-0 week, beating Sayreville 1-0 in eight innings on a walkoff on Monday in the first round, then Metuchen 1-0 Thursday in the semis in nine innings, also on a walkoff.

They’ll face Edison (13-9) – making its debut at No. 4 – Saturday in the finals at 2 pm on CJSR. The Eagles beat Old Bridge 2-1 in 12 innings Monday in the first round, then pounded GMC White Division champion St. Thomas Aquinas 9-1 in Thursday’s quarterfinal round, before picking up a 3-0 win over Middlesex in the semis this past Saturday.

At No. 5 is Rutgers Prep (11-8), up two spots in the rankings this week. After a Monday loss at Montgomery, 4-2, they beat Somerville 6-4 in the SCT quarterfinals Wednesday, setting up Monday’s meeting with Ridge at 4 pm in the semis at TD Bank Park. Middlesex (15-5) is an interesting one, as the Blue Jays had two big GMC Tournament wins during the week – Monday at Colonia, 3-1 in the first round, then again in the quarterfinals Thursday, holding on for a 5-4 victory over South Plainfield. But, they would fall Saturday, 3-0 to Edison in the semifinals.

South Plainfield (13-9) falls to seventh, on a 1-1 week. The Tigers beat Perth Amboy 11-0 in the first round of the GMCT on Monday, but holding on for a 5-4 victory over South Plainfield.

Spotswood (14-9) moved up to nine after a 2-1 week. They beat Monroe, 12-1, in the GMCT’s first round Monday, then topped South River and Julius Rosado 4-0 on Thursday in the quarters, before falling to St. Joseph in Saturday’s semifinals, 4-3.

Colonia (17-4) drops from five to nine. They were eliminated in the first round of the GMC Tournament with a 3-1 loss to Middlesex Monday, though they came back with three wins, two against non-conference squads, including 3-2 over Marlboro Thursday, 3-2 at South Brunswick Friday, and 1-0 at home against Scotch Plains-Fanwood on Saturday.

And dropping six spots to ten is Woodbridge (15-5). The Barrons became the second top seed since COVID to get knocked out in the first round of the GMCT – the other was Kennedy knocking off Monroe in 2021 – with a 2-1 loss to South River Monday. But the Barrons bounced back with an 11-0 win over Middlesex Friday, and a 14-5 rout of JP Stevens Saturday.

Eighth-seed Spotswood led 3-1 heading into the seventh inning, but for the third straight GMC Tournament game, five-seed St. Joseph-Metuchen won on a walk-off, getting three in the bottom of the seventh – the last on a JP Zayle RBI single – to win 4-3 and advance to the GMC Tournament title game against 11-seed Edison.
