History for Hillsborough! Raiders win first-ever state title, edging West Orange 55-52 in Group 4 Girls’ Final at Rutgers

Last year, the Hillsborough girls’ basketball team won its first ever state sectional title.

This year, they did it again, and again rewrote this history books.

The Lady Raiders held off West Orange – for a second time this year – 55-52 to win the NJSIAA Group 4 Girls’ Basketball Championship at Rutgers’ Jersey Mike’s Arena, as heard Sunday afternoon on Central Jersey Sports Radio.

Senior Cesci Schiro finished with a team-high 18 points, while fellow senior Mya Loniewski finished with 17. They were the only two ‘Boro players in double figures.

What was more impressive was that Schiro played much of the fourth quarter with four fouls. Coach Courtney Tierney after the game said she was worried about that, but “Cesci wasn’t.”

And she didn’t have to. The game didn’t see a ton of lead changes or ties, but it was tight throughout, as no one led by more than two possessions the entire way.

Group 4 Girls’ Finals Preview: Hillsborough, West Orange to meet again, battling for state title

It’s not very often two teams who met in the regular season, let alone three-and-a-half weeks ago, will meet for a state title, but here we are.

When Jersey Mike’s Arena at Rutgers University in Piscataway hosts the NJSIAA Girls’ Group 4 State Championship Game Sunday at 4 pm – which you can hear LIVE on Central Jersey Sports Radio, with pregame at 3:45 – the matchup will be Hillsborough and West Orange, who met back on February 20th, with the Raiders winning a 58-54 decision at home.

That matchup came just two days before Hillsborough played in the Somerset County Tournament final, a 68-48 loss to Gill St. Bernard’s, their defeat this season.

But while the teams may be intimately acquainted with each other, it’s also unfamiliar territory for both. Neither has ever been to the state finals, let alone won it.

NOTES AND NUGGETS:

Grueling Schedule: Hillsborough plays in one of the toughest divisions in the state, but it’s also made them tougher. All six of their losses have come against division teams, including three losses to Gill St. Bernard’s – two in the regular season, one in the Somerset County Tournament final – two regular season losses to Rutgers Prep, and one to Franklin. The Raiders split with the Warriors in the regular season, but won the rubber match in the Central Jersey Group 4 semifinals, 68-55. They finished fourth in the division at 5-5, a half-game behind Franklin. Their biggest win of the season prior to the state tournament, was a 58-54 win over Rutgers Prep in the county semifinals that was their first over the Argonauts since beating them in the 2006 SCT final, snapping a 25-game skid in the series.

Watt and Karriem Carry Mountaineers: Though Rhyan Watt is the only West Orange player to score in double-figures in all five tournament games so far, averaging 18.8 points per game in the states, Anaya Karriem has been a monster on the glass as well, registering three double-doubles. In the sectional semifinals against Ridgewood, she dropped in 17 points and ten rebounds. In the finals against Morristown it was a 13-point, 10-board effort. And in the Group 4 semis against Westfield, Karriem went off for 13 and 13. She’s also hit four treys in the state tournament. Watt, meanwhile, has scored 20-plus points twice in the NJSIAA tournament, including 25 against Morristown in the North 1, Group 4 final. She’s also had ten steals in each of the last two games.

Rare Second Meeting: Since the state finals are often teams from different regions of the state, it’s rare the two finalists would have played each other earlier in the season. Out of 12 state finals matchups this weekend at Rutgers, only one other game is a rematch from earlier in the season, the New Providence and Glen Ridge girls in the Group 1 final. The Pioneers won that one Saturday afternoon, 42-36, after a January 18th meeting on the road also went their way, 57-43.

Early West Orange TDs, turnovers do in top-seed, undefeated Phillipsburg in North 2, Group 5 title game

The Phillipsburg offense was slow to get going, and West Orange capitalized to get the first two scores of the game, leading 14-0 at the end of one quarter of play.

And while the Stateliners would cut it to a touchdown, on a 13-yard Xavier Moore run with under six minutes to go before halftime, the early deficit would prove too much to overcome, as top-seed and previously-unbeaten Phillipsburg suffered its first loss of the season, a 28-7 defeat in the North Jersey, Section 2, Group 5 title game on their home field at Maloney Stadium.

A Jett Genovese interception – just his second of the year – gave the Mountaineers primo field position, at the ‘Liners’ 28, and three plays later West Orange punched another one in to go up 21-7 just before the half.

In those first 24 minutes, Phillipsburg managed just 81 yards of total offense, 77 of which came on the ground. By the time it was all over, the Mountaineers had outgained P’burg 295-166. That was a season low offensive output for the Stateliners; their previous low was 188 total yards gained in a 28-0 win over East Brunswick in Week Eight.

And the second half wasn’t much better, beginning with a fake punt run on the opening possession called off on a false start. A late third-quarter drive ended with a fourth-down incompletion in the end zone. Another drive that started deep only got them to their own 20.

West Orange iced the game with a 13-yard pick-six by Jarvis Jones with 2:54 left for the final margin, 28-7.

Though Phillipsburg’s playoff run is over, the Stateliners still have what many would call their most important game of the year, against Easton on Thanksgiving at Lafayette.

The last time P’burg started was 10-0 was in 2017, when they won their first eight regular season games plus two playoff games before falling to Easton 21-14. They then came back and lost the next week in the North 2, Group 4 title game at MetLife to North Hunterdon, 21-20.

The Lions play Saturday at noon in the North 2, Group 4 final against Randolph, in a game you can hear on Central Jersey Sports Radio.
