Big Central leadership pleased with parity, growth of league heading into Season No. 6

The formation in 2018 of the Big Central Football Conference – essentially an amalgamation of the GMC and Mid-State Conferences – was born out of necessity, intended to address scheduling difficulties.

Six years into the grand experiment, which began play in the 2020 season, league officials couldn’t be happier about where it is, and where it’s going.

The 2024 campaign brought two state sectional champions (Phillipsburg and Somerville) and the first berth for a league team in the state Group finals, with the Stateliners going all the way to the Group 4 title game at Rutgers, falling to Winslow Twp.

But it also saw JP Stevens break its long losing streak, then win a second game, while Highland Park – which snapped its own, even longer skid in the 2023 finale – put together four straight victories overall after getting off to a 3-0 start.

League President Scott Miller is just as proud of those two achievements as he is the first two.  And better yet in regards to the Hawks and the Owls?  They did it without being in an “Ivy” Division, and NJSIAA-sanctioned division where struggling teams can be together, with the understanding they will not qualify for the playoffs in exchange for schedule relief.

It’s meant to help struggling teams regain their footing.  But HP and Stevens are getting there without it. And Miller says he never wants to tell a team going into a season they can’t make the playoffs. The Owls nearly did.

As the league embarks on its sixth season, Central Jersey Sports Radio’s Mike Pavlichko spoke with Big Central Conference President Scott Miller at the third annual BCC Media Day up at Kean University’s Harwood Arena in Union.

All smiles at Big Central Media Day; Monday the real work begins as preseason camp kicks off

The Big Central Conference’s second annual Media Day was another huge success, showcasing every team in the league to spread the word about its 59 teams as the conference heads into Year Five of existence.

What began with years of work ahead of time, a merger between the Greater Middlesex Conference and the Mid-State 39 – helmed by current BCC President Scott Miller, and now-retired Athletic Directors Ben LaSala of Colonia and John Maggio of Bridgewater-Raritan – is now starting to rock and roll.

Speaking with Miller at the 2024 Media Day at Kean University’s Harwood Arena in Union, the league’s top man noted that a website is on its way sooner than later, and an Instagram account is already up and running. You can see it and follow by clicking here.

The league also unveiled a new logo, featuring a football in dark blue and gold, with lettering reminiscent of traditional college apparel.

Big Central President Scott Miller wants to grow and promote the league as it enters fourth season

Hard to believe: the Big Central Conference is about to begin its fourth season of play.

Through no fault of its own, Year One was an inauspicious start. Of course, everything looked good on paper as the calendar turned to its debut year, 2020. That is, until March, when the COVID-19 pandemic reached every square inch of the globe, shutting down schools, businesses, and, of course, sports.

No one even knew if there would be a football season, let alone a school year, as remote learners put away their laptops in June.

As it turned out, there was an abbreviated schedule, but no playoffs to be had. Too bad, because the fledgling league had some exciting teams. In one last dose of irony, a highly anticipated “pod playoff” matchup between 6-1 Phillipsburg and 7-0 Somerville – widely considered the best in the conference, especially after the Pioneers won a battle of unbeatens in Woodbridge the week prior – got cancelled due to COVID-related issues with both schools.

Now, the league is in Year Four. Tuesday, it ran its first ever Big Central Media Day – Part one of Two, with the second taking place today back at Iron Peak Sports & Events in Hillsborough. It’s all thanks to numerous sponsorships and partnerships. The Big Central is on Twitter (or “X,” for the few who choose to call it by its new name) at @big_central_nj. And there’s a website coming soon.

One of the key men behind it all is Scott Miller, the Brearley Athletic Director and former longtime football coach. We caught up with him at Iron Peak Tuesday to talk about the direction of the Big Central.

Brearley, Hillside fall in Saturday sectional title games

While North Hunterdon earned the Big Central its section sectional championship Saturday – and fourth in two seasons for the fledgling league – both Brearley and Hillside lost their title tilts up in North Jersey.

North 1, Group 1 Final: #1 Mountain Lakes 16, #4 Brearley 8

Mountain Lakes struck first in the game, with a five-yard TD run from Jordan Hernando late in the first quarter, but Brearley almost got it back near the midway point of the second quarter, on a Matt Sims-to-Brendan Fitzsimmons 15-yard touchdown pass. But they missed the game-tying two-point conversion.

And when Mountain Lakes responded on the next drive with a Gavin Anderson 45-yard touchdown catch, few could have predicted it would be the last score of the game. But it would be, and Brearley would suffer its first loss of the season.

Matt Sims closed his Brearley career with his best year: 1,706 rushing yards (including 173 Saturday) and 1,131 passing (including 68 Saturday). He also threw 11 TD passes, but just one interception.

Brearley finishes the season 11-1.

North 1, Group 3 Final: #1 Old Tappan 28, #2 Hillside 14

Old Tappan got three touchdown runs from Aidan Heanay to beat Hillside 28-14 at home to win its first sectional title since 2017.

A Caleb Salters touchdown for the Comets with just under four minutes left got them to within two scores, but unlike in the first two rounds of the playoffs, a comeback was not in the offing for Hillside, which tried an on-side play on the ensuing kickoff, but saw the ball go out of bounds.

Syracuse-bound Mu Parkman scored the first Hillside touchdown, to get them within 21-7 with just over four minutes to go before halftime.

The Comets’ season ends at 9-2. Their only other loss came to St. Thomas Aquinas in Week Five.

Who’s left?

The only Big Central teams remaining in the playoffs are Edison and North Hunterdon.

The sixth-seeded Eagles won at top seed Lenape Friday night to take the Central Jersey Group 5 title. They will play in the South Group 5 semifinals against unbeaten Toms River North (12-0). The top-seed and South Jersey Group 5 champion next Saturday or Sunday at Cherokee High School in Medford – just a 15-minute drive from Lenape – with the day and time to be announced this weekend by the NJSIAA.

The top-seeded Lions won the North 2, Group 4 title Saturday at home, 49-35 over 2nd-seed Randolph, and move on to the North Group 4 semifinals at Franklin High School next Saturday or Sunday, again with the day and time to be announced by the NJSIAA this weekend. They will face North 1 Group 4 champion Northern Highlands (8-3).

Brearley does what it does best, led by Sims and Fitzsimmons, to punch its ticket to a final

If it wasn’t for the fact that the win put Brearley in a championship game for the first time since 2015, the result might have drawn a yawn.

After all, it’s what Brearley has done time and time again this season: let Matt Sims run the ball, let him get the ball to his receivers, and the score will take care of itself.

That’s been the recipe eight previous times this season – plus a forfeit win over Dunellen – and it was the recipe Friday night as fourth-seed Brearley (well, mostly Sims) ran past eighth-seed Kinnelon 45-14 Friday night in the North 2, Group 2 semifinals in Kenilworth, to clinch a berth in next week’s title game.

They will play at second-seed Mountain Lakes, which was a 27-21 winner over third-seed Waldwick.

In his final game on the Brearley field, senior quarterback Matt Sims went a perfect 6-of-6 passing for 154 yards and two touchdowns, both to Brendan Fitzsimmons, who had five catches overall for 151 yards. Sims also ran 28 times for 199 yards and three scores.

Brearley rides Sims – surprise, surprise – to 9th straight win, and into North 2, Group 1 semifinals

There’s a supporting cast to be sure, but there’s no mistaking Matt Sims is the star.

And that’s just fine with Brearley.

Another outstanding performance from the senior signal caller – five touchdown runs, 204 yards rushing on just 18 carries – got fourth-seed Brearley (9-0) over 5th-seed North Arlington 50-16 Friday night in the opening round of the North Jersey, Section 2, Group 1 playoffs.

Next up is a surprise home game against 8th-seed Kinnelon (6-3), which knocked off top-seed Park Ridge on the road Friday night, 36-34. That game is scheduled for 6 pm next Friday.

Brearley continues playoff push with huge road win, 34-20 over Bound Brook

Don’t give Brearley any bulletin board material. They don’t care. Never have, never will.

That seems to be the attitude of the 2021 version of the Bears, who snapped a two-game losing streak at the perfect time, beating Bound Brook on the road Friday night 34-20.

The win didn’t clinch Brearley a playoff berth, but it was their most highly-rated opponent remaining in their final three weeks. Without a win, they might not have a fighting chance at making the playoffs in North Jersey Group 1.

But they got that win, playing ball control offense and using a three-touchdown performance from senior Quinn Lonergan. The runningback not only had two touchdowns and 107 yards rushing, but he had 68 yards receiving, and a touchdown.

Brearley off to hot 2-0 start, looks to keep it going against rival Roselle Park in Week 3

Brearley head coach Scott Miller had been saying all summer his team’s success in 2021 would be a direct result of its offensive line, whether they could jell, and how far they could progress.

Through two games, the results are better than he could have imagined.

And that’s a big reason why the Bears are off to a 2-0 start.

Of course, the skill positions need to come through, and that’s where the numbers have been.

Brearley won its opener against Johnson two weeks ago 36-0, then went to Charger Stadium and beat Spotswood Saturday afternoon 32-0.

Offensively, quarterback Matt Sims ran for 175 yards on 24 carries and scored a pair of touchdowns, then threw for another 49 yards and scored twice more. Runningback Quinn Lonergan added a touchdown and rushed for 137 yards in the victory.

And the defense? What else can you say other than they’ve pitched two shutouts.

Miller knows Roselle Park – a big rival just a short, two-mile drive away – will be a big challenge this Friday night, so he’s not having his team take their collective feet off the gas pedal anytime soon. And wins will be crucial with a late-season stretch of Bernards, New Providence and Bound Brook on the schedule.
