If it wasn’t for the fact that the win put Brearley in a championship game for the first time since 2015, the result might have drawn a yawn.
After all, it’s what Brearley has done time and time again this season: let Matt Sims run the ball, let him get the ball to his receivers, and the score will take care of itself.
That’s been the recipe eight previous times this season – plus a forfeit win over Dunellen – and it was the recipe Friday night as fourth-seed Brearley (well, mostly Sims) ran past eighth-seed Kinnelon 45-14 Friday night in the North 2, Group 2 semifinals in Kenilworth, to clinch a berth in next week’s title game.
They will play at second-seed Mountain Lakes, which was a 27-21 winner over third-seed Waldwick.
In his final game on the Brearley field, senior quarterback Matt Sims went a perfect 6-of-6 passing for 154 yards and two touchdowns, both to Brendan Fitzsimmons, who had five catches overall for 151 yards. Sims also ran 28 times for 199 yards and three scores.
