Laverty-Caldwell connection takes home fan vote for Highlight Reel Play of the Year

There were some great touchdown runs and some trickeration on a kickoff.

But the clip that won the Highlight Reel Play of the Year in our annual fan vote was the one that helped lead Bernards to its first ever state sectional title.

Without it, the Mountaineers might very well have seen its hopes dashed by Lakeland. Instead, the Lancers’ field goal at the horn sent the game to overtime, where the ‘Nards Ball defense held, and senior quarterback Connor Laverty scored on his own to win the game.

On 4th and goal from the 11, Laverty hit fellow senior and favorite wide receiver target Jake Caldwell for a touchdown that, with the extra point, put his team up by 3.

Training at Elite QB has been a weekly, year-round ritual for Bernards signal-caller

When Bernards quarterback Connor Laverty came to Matt Bastardi to train to be a better quarterback, there wasn’t one thing that necessarily stuck out more than anything else that he wanted to improve upon.

“All of the above,” says Bastardi, founder and instructor at Elite QB Football Training Academy.

In fact, he’d come to Elite QB on the heels of one of his predecessors, Teddy Gouldin, who – in the 2020 COVID year – threw for 1,172 yards and 14 touchdowns with just one interception during an 8-1 campaign, the only loss coming in the opener, 14-9 at Hillside.

Even during what has been perhaps the most memorable season ever in Bernards’ long history, Laverty has come by every Sunday, according to Bastardi, bringing several of his receiver teammates with him to train.

First time, long time! Bernards takes first-ever state title with 23-17 OT win over Lakeland

Jake Caldwell got Bernards back into the game. Then he almost gave it away. Then he was the hero… again.

So was Connor Laverty.

Caldwell, the senior wide receiver – a favorite target of fellow senior Connor Laverty, the quarterback – had a 65-yard punt return for a touchdown with just over two minutes to go before halftime to tie the score at seven, but muffed a punt with just over nine minutes left in the game that gave Lakeland the ball back up 14-10, costing Bernards great field position and a chance to take the lead.

But Bernards held, and on their next possession, Caldwell gave the Mountaineers their first lead in the game at 17-14 with exactly one-minute to go on an 11-yard touchdown catch on fourth and goal. It was a touchdown that would prove important, since Lakeland came right back down an sent the game to overtime on a 43-yard field goal as time expired.

In overtime, however, Bernards would not be denied, and that’s when it was Laverty’s turn.

Lakeland went first in overtime, could only gain four yards, and missed a 38-yard field goal on its possession. That left the Mountaineers to play it conservative and keep the ball on the ground.

Laverty – who’d thrown 18 times on the night – handed off to freshman Patrick Carlisle a couple of times, gained a first down at the 14, got his team down to the seven, and on third-and-four punched it in the end zone to set off a raucous celebration at Olcott Field, winning the North Jersey, Section 2, Group 2 title with a 23-7 victory.

It was Bernards’ first title in three tries, with previous sectional finals berths in 1997 and 2016.

Now, the 12-0 Mountaineers – the last remaining Big Central team alive in the playoffs after St. Thomas Aquinas and Phillipsburg both lost Friday night – will travel to Westwood next Friday evening to play the Cardinals in the Group 2 semifinals. Top-seed Westwood (11-0) beat second-seed Rutherford Friday night in the North 1, Group 2 final, 20-7, for their seventh sectional championship.

The winner will go on to the Group 2 championship game the week after Thanksgiving against either South 2 champion Rumson-Fair Haven or Central 2 champion Willingboro.

Laverty has given his all his entire career at Bernards; now it’s time to bring home a trophy

If the Bernards football team can beat Lakeland Friday night to bring home the first state sectional title in program history, it’ll be the shortest walk from the trophy presentation to the school’s trophy case.

Connor Laverty will savor it.

A senior quarterback who has been instrumental – along with so many other Mountaineers on a week-in, week-out basis – in the program’s success, he and his teammates got a surprise home game in the finals.

That’s because minutes after they crushed Sussex Tech in the semis, they found out top-seed Caldwell was upset by the Lancers, meaning Bernards would get one more home game, prompting a second celebration at Olcott Field.

And that’s where everyone will be making noise again this Friday night, cheering on a Mountaineer team that already has set a program record for wins in a season (11) and total points scored (438).

The defense has been ridiculous, too, allowing just 72 points, a program best under head coach Jon Simoneau, leading to a +33.3 point differential, better by almost ten points than any other previous season under his tenure.

Central Jersey Sports Radio will broadcast Friday night’s North 2, Group 2 title game between second-seed Bernards (11-0) and fifth-seed Lakeland (8-3), with pregame starting at 6:30 and kickoff at 7 pm. Mike Pavlichko and Dylan Allen will call all the play-by-play; click here to listen.

Two Big Central players among more than a dozen from NJ being considered for “Heart of a Giant” award by USA Football

Bernards quarterback Connor Laverty and Carteret linebacker Sir Hezekiah Ragland are among 20 student athletes from the tri-state area who are in the running this week for USA Football’s “Heart of a Giant” award, presented by the Hospital for Special Surgery and the NFL’s New York Giants.

According to USA Football’s website, the Heart of a Giant award “seeks to find and highlight Tri-State high school tackle and flag football athletes, student managers, student mascots or other designated student team members who demonstrate that extra something special. The ones that have a relentless work ethic and unmatched love for the game.”

Coaches wind up submitting hundreds of candidates, which get pared down into six voting groups to come up with one finalist per group. Laverty and Ragland are in the Week 5 voting, which began this week, and overlaps with Week 4 this week, and the Week 6 group next week. For those two, voting began back on October 5th and ends at 11:59 pm on October 22nd. Fans can vote once per day on the USA Football page, by clicking here.

They are the only two entrants from the Big Central Conference who made it to the voting round.

The six finalists will be announced at noon on October 30th, along with five wild card finalists. They all most then create a video of no longer than six minutes highlighting “the reasons that the player has a ‘Heart of a Giant.'” All the finalists win a $1,000 equipment grant for their school.

The ultimate winner will be announced no later than January 7th, 2024.

The player named to have the “Heart of a Giant” wins an addition $9,000 equipment grant for their school, and a trophy.

A Big Central player winning the award isn’t without precedent. Though the league was still yet to play its first game – its debut season was the 2020 COVID year – Shadon Willis of Hillside won the award in 2018.

Recognized on the USA Football website, Willis’ bio says: “At the age of four, when Shadon’s parents were no longer able take care of him and his three siblings, he found refuge with his aunt and uncle and considers his cousins as siblings. Because of his lack of resources, Shadon made some decisions that ended with him being benched his freshman year, while devastating at the time, he used this experience as motivation to change his life and now recognizes how the game of football has helped him overcome various hardships.”
