There’s Jayden Loftin, the defensive end and who’s missed the entire season with an ACL injury and is headed to Tennessee.
There’s Terrell Mitchell, the runningback/d-back who’s gashed defenses all year long and is headed to Wake Forest.
There’s Brenden Pacheco, the senior quarterback who could have his pick of schools, too, and is likely to get many more offers in the coming weeks and months.
And there’s Brady Scheier. He might be one of the top two stars on any other football team in the Big Central: an extremely talented, intelligent football player who has been instrumental in his team’s success.
He may not get the ink the other guys do, but he’s just as much a reason the Pioneers are the top seed in Central Jersey Group 3, undefeated at 11-0, and playing for the section championship Friday night at home against seventh-seed Delsea (4-6).
You can hear that game on Central Jersey Sports Radio live from Brooks Field, with kickoff slated for 7 pm and pregame at 6:30. Mike Pavlichko and Chris Tsakonas will call all the action. Click here to listen.
Scheier is the team’s top receiver, with 35 catches for 527 yards and eight touchdowns, part of an offense that has amassed 3,703 yards from scrimmage this year, 1,381 of which have come through the air.
But he’s more than just numbers. Head coach Matt Bloom calls him the smartest football player he’s ever coached, and there’s a good reason for that. He comes from a football family, and his father, Adam, is the special teams coordinator and tight ends coach at Temple. He was in charge of special teams at Rutgers the two years prior, and also has been at Lehigh, Wake Forest, Bowling Green, and Ohio State, among other stops.
But Scheier isn’t just intelligent about football; he’s solid in the classroom. So much so, he won’t be going right to college upon graduation this Spring. He’ll prep for a year at The Hun School before heading off to Princeton.
We hear they’re pretty good academically.
