Hillside takes Patriot Gold title with win over North Plainfield…

In a stellar defensive effort, Hillside outgained North Plainfield 196-42, holding the Canuck rushing game to -5 yards, in a 26-0 win Saturday afternoon at Conant Street Park.

It took the Comets a full half to really get going offensively, leading just 7-0 at halftime on a 40-yard touchdown pass from Travis Miles to Tyler Childs in the first quarter. But they’d score three times in the second half to put the game away.

And it was the defense that kicked things off in the third quarter, as Eli Wicker grabbed a Zion Fairley pass at the 34-yard line and brought it back to the house to make it 14-0.

In the fourth quarter, the offense got into the act. Josiah Hicks scored on a one-yard touchdown run while Muwahid Willliams scored on a 13-yard TD run to get it to 26-0, the final score.

The win clinched the Patriot Gold Division title for Hillside, its first since 2023, as they swept the division this season, going 4-0 for the first time since sweeping the Patriot Silver in 2022, a year they finished 9-2. It was also their third shutout of the season.

The Comets are now 6-1 ahead of two road games to close out the regular season, next week at Manville, and Cutoff Weekend and as-yet undefeated Cranford.

North Plainfield drops to 4-3, 1-2 in the Patriot Gold, with a trip to Delaware Valley next week and a home game Cutoff Weekend against Brearley.

Dayton rolls at South River, 41-6…

The Bulldogs got three touchdown passes from Adrian Bernknopf, who now has 19 on the season, en route to a win over the Rams that sets up a winner-take-all game for the Freedom Gold Division title next Friday night in Springfield against Highland Park.

The first came on the first play of the game from scrimmage, a 65-yard bomb to Jackson Babiarz. He also connected on a 40-yarder to Kevin Lynch, while Tyler Fuscaldo added two rushing touchdowns, giving him eight on the year.

Babiarz, a senior, also eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark receiving for his career. He had 919 combined, this year and last, entering the contest.

Dayton is now 5-2, 4-0 in the Freedom Gold, and will host Highland park (6-0, 4-0) next week at 7 pm in Springfield for the division title, before closing out with another solid opponent, Manville, on Cutoff Weekend.

The Rams – whose lone score came on a six-yard run by Dominic Harris – dropped to 0-7, 0-4 in the division. They’ll play road games the next two weeks at JP Stevens and arch-rival Spotswood, before closing the regular season at Keansburg on Thursday, October 29th.
