If the South Brunswick football team was going to make the postseason for the first time in three years, the time to start was Friday night, on a trip to East Brunswick.
One down, two to go.
The Vikings beat the Bears 45-22 Friday night at Jay Doyle Stadium, scoring the game’s first 31 points before East Brunswick could even get on the board.
They opened with some help from the defense, getting an interception barely three minutes into the game, then scoring on the ensuing drive, thanks to a 21-yard touchdown run from Jaylen Brundidge out of the wildcat. Greg Schifrin kicked a 30-yard field goal at 3:42 of the first quarter to make it 10-0.
They’d score again with a seven-yard touchdown run by senior QB Brendan Shearstone just 1:17 into the second period to make it 17-0, then took a 24-0 lead with 3:36 to go before the half with an eleven-yard TD scamper by Zi’yon Collins, and made it 31-zip on a Shearstone 93-yard connection to Kamari Toney with 4:20 to go before the Bears finally put up some points, on a seven-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Sean Christie to Ezra Franklin, leaving it 31-7 Vikings at the half.
Brundidge scored again at 4:25 of the third quarter to make it 39-6, and kick off a running clock. Jayden Charles returned the kickoff for East Brunswick to get it to 39-14, Toney ran another score in for the Vikings from 25 yards to make it 45-14 with 45 seconds to go in the third, and Christie hit Franklin again – with 2:05 to go to make the final score.

South Brunswick improves to 3-4, 2-2 in the Big Central National Gold Division, and very likely helped their playoff chances with the win, while the Bears dropped to 3-4, but 0-3 in the National Gold.
