Phillipsburg joins Somerville in line for a top seed in updated playoff standings after Friday, while Colonia and Spotswood appear in

With a 49-21 win at Bridgewater-Raritan Friday night, No. 6 Phillipsburg looks like it’s set to join No. 2 Somerville as a top seed in the upcoming NJSIAA state football playoffs.

The Pioneers already looked to have it locked down before Friday night’s game against Watchung Hills, which they won at home , 46-7.

As of Friday night – and things could change with about two dozen games on the docket Saturday – 28 teams appear to be in the playoffs, with two of those being bubble teams squeaking in, and a 29th team that could potentially get bounced.

One of those is bubble teams we think made it is Spotswood, which currently sits in 15th after a 28-6 win Friday night at Roselle Park. They also picked up some help from Metuchen, which was upset 12-0 at North Plainfield Friday night. The Bulldogs (6-3) dropped to 16th, but Spotswood (8-1) may have made it.

A bunch of other teams around them lost Friday night, too. Only one team below them in the standings could top them: Haddon Heights (1-6) plays host to Northern Burlington (4-4). It appears that even if Haddon wins, they would jump Spotswood, but only bump them to 16th, with Metuchen the odd man out.

Colonia sits at 16th in North Group 4, following a 36-29 double-overtime home loss to Old Bridge, which looks like it wrapped up a top eight seed in South 5 and a first round home game. The Patriots could have sewed it up with a win. Right behind them is North Hunterdon, but Colonia beat the Lions head-to-head this year, so North would be out. And even if Teaneck were to win Saturday against Bergenfield, they would finish 17th, behind Colonia. They’re the only team with a shot left to play this weekend, so we think the Patriots are in.
