Eight boys basketball teams from the Central Jersey Sports Radio coverage area were in action Thursday night as the opening round of the state tournament continued, but only two of them – South Plainfield and Manville – advanced.
Highland Park, Dunellen, Somerset Tech and Perth Amboy Magnet all got knocked out in Central Jersey Group 1, while Carteret and Somerville were eliminated in Central Jersey Group 3.
Manville’s win came in dramatic fashion as the 5th-seeded Mustangs beat 12th-seed Florence at home, 49-48 on a trey with 1.2 seconds to go from Edryn Morales, putting them in the quarterfinals of Central Jersey Group 1 next Tuesday at 4th-seed Brearley. Morales finished with a double-double of 21 points and 20 rebounds, his second this season, and second in the past six games.
In North 2, Group 3, second-seed South Plainfield topped 15-seed Governor Livingston at home, 59-51, behind a 25-point night from Abdul Adebule, who led all scorers in the game. Jordan Jones added 12 for the Tigers, who trailed 28-27 at the half, and again by one after three, but pulled away with an 18-9 fourth quarter.
Third-seed Colonia was also scheduled to play Thursday night against 14th-seed Fort Lee, but the teams moved the game to Friday due to the sudden passing Wednesday of Patriots’ assistant coach Danny Brix.
