With just two more full weeks of the regular season to go, we’re updating the UNOFFICIAL UPR standings for Group 3 based on Friday’s results, as reported by Gridiron New Jersey, which calculates all the numbers for the NJSIAA.
NORTH 3
Even with wins this week, Cranford and Hillside each dropped a spot in the playoff standings, with the Cougars now fourth and Hillside third. That’s because Sparta jumped them into third, behind overall No. 1 West Morris and No. 2 Old Tappan. Even with just two weeks left, it may be too early to tell if either can earn a top seed, but they do legitimately have a shot at staying in the top four, which would get them first round home games through at least the sectional semifinals.
Summit is now 3-3 after winning last night and on a three-game winning streak. That has helped vault the Hilltoppers a good deal in the standings the last few weeks. At 0-3, they were 24th. Now, they’re in seventh place, up six spots this week after a 28-14 win over Linden.
Wow: from nowhere near the playoffs, to a potential top eight seed. That’s impressive.
Here are the current unofficial standings:
SOUTH 3
The highest team here in the standings is South Plainfield, which remains undefeated at 6-0 and is in seventh in the standings – where Delsea and Camden, respectively, both undefeated, lead the pack. There are six unbeaten teams here: Seneca in third, Ocean Township in fifth and Hopewell Valley in sixth.
But at least the Tigers moved up two places with last night’s win at Voorhees. The next two week’s opponents – Perth Amboy and Monroe – may not help them much.
Carteret jumped four spots – for now – from 15th to 11th, but we still think the 6-1 Ramblers (can wee declare them fully recovered from the COVID stoppage?) are a bottom eight team, mainly because of the schedule. Then again, if they knock off Hillside on Cutoff Weekend, we may retract that statement.
And then there’s Somerville. It’s desperation time for the Pioneers after a loss Friday night to Westfield. We thought last week they would need to win two of their last three games to get in the playoffs, and we still think that’s right. Which means the next two weeks are both must-wins, starting Friday night at home against Hillsborough. They close Cutoff Weekend on Friday night at South Brunswick.
