With just two more full weeks of the regular season to go, we’re updating the UNOFFICIAL UPR standings for Group 5 based on Friday’s results, as reported by Gridiron New Jersey, which calculates all the numbers for the NJSIAA. Remember, Saturday games are NOT included.
NORTH 2
The only Big Central team here is Bernards, which fell to seventh after beating Bound Brook last night, in large part due to the Crusaders being winless, and with an OSI value down around 30. The Mountaineers’ power point average climbed – mainly due to other residuals – and their OSI climbed a little, but not much. Others fared better in terms of opponents.
The top two places are occupied by Westwood and Caldwell, both 6-0, with Caldwell’s best-in-the-state winning streak now at 21 games. Newton (6-0) and Rutherford (5-0) are right behind them occupying the third and fourth spots.
Bernards (6-1) at least is hoping to earn a first-round home game, finishing in the top eight. They’ll need wins in their last two games – both at home, against New Providence and Governor Livingston – and likely need some help to have a shot.
Here are the current unofficial standings:
SOUTH 5
A few teams, including some local ones, still have to play in this supersection Saturday afternoon, so keep that in mind. But as of now, two teams that did play last night – Raritan and Haddonfield – head the section. The Rockets had a big win over St. John Vianney last night – a mltiplier – to vault them solidly into first, as the Rockets jump up from fourth.
Haddonfield lost and falls to second, while Rumson – which also lost, fell to third. Everything went right for Raritan last night.
New Providence is the highest-ranked team here – in eighth, up one spot – but the Pioneers (3-3) play Metuchen today. It’s doubtful that will move the needle much, however, especially with several residuals already counted. Delaware Valley is right behind them in ninth place, after a 48-0 shutout over South River out west. They actually fell to ninth, as New Providence and Pleasantville – with a win over Clayton last night – jumped them.
Johnson dropped a spot after a loss last night to Hillside, their second straight loss. The Crusaders close with Spotswood next Friday night and at South River Saturday of Cutoff Weekend. We think the’re still a good bet, in 14th place, as long as they split their last two games.
Roselle (2-4) is in 17th, but they climbed up from 24th last week with a huge non-conference win over Ridgefield Park of the Super Football Conference (they were 4-1 coming in). That’s a big jump and obviously has the Rams trending in the right direction with two games to go. They close at Belvidere and home to Roselle Park. They may have to win both to make it, and get some help.
One thing that may help: 16th place WIllingboro, which lost last night, only has one win. The minimum to get in is two. So, the Chimeras absolutely must at least split their next two, otherwise the 17th team – in this case, Roselle – would get in. Willingboro has Nottingham (3-2, today vs. Ewing) and Burlington Township (3-3) to close out the regular season. Maybe it’ll happen, maybe it won’t.
