Tough, physical play has Sayreville at its best heading into semifinal matchup at Mount Olive

The Sayreville football team may be the lowest seeded team from the Big Central left in the playoffs – the sixth-seed in North 2, Group 4 – but other than who plays at home or who plays on the road, you can throw that out when it comes to this point of the season.

As Bombers’ first-year head coach Don Sofilkanich says, At this point, “everybody’s good. You’re not in the semifinals because you’re not good.”

For Sayreville, physical play has been the key, and Sofilkanich expects that will be the case against second-seed Mount Olive, a team he sees as very similar to his.

The Bombers (8-2) plan a heavy dose of Zaimer Wright, who scored all five touchdowns in a first-round win over Montgomery, and has racked up 1,647 yards on the ground and 20 TDs in this, his senior year, and that’s even accounting for the fact that he sat out two games earlier this year. Otherwise, he might be well over 2,000 by now.

The Marauders (9-1) have a thousand-yard rusher – literally! – in junior Tyler Cumming, with 1,000 yards even and 11 touchdowns, while quarterback Jake Asbury has tossed it for 1,335 yards and 12 TDs.

The winner faces the victor of the other semifinal game in the section between 4th-seed Irvington and top-seed Ramapo, also being played Friday night.
