Williams out at Plainfield, but Hutchins expected to be in the running to lead Cardinals

After fours seasons as Plainfield’s head football coach – the last of which he spent on the sidelines with a bad back – James Williams and the Cardinals are parting ways.

Plainfield has posted for the head coaching position – with the notice also included in this week’s NJFCA newsletter – and Williams confirmed the news to Central Jersey Sports Radio Tuesday morning.

Laid up with a back injury, Williams didn’t coach at all this season, with assistant Al-Majeed Hutchins taking the reins. He led the Cardinals to a 6-4 record, their best since 2005, which also was the last time Plainfield beat Westfield on Thanksgiving until last Thursday, when they pulled out a 14-9 win in the rain at Kehler Stadium.

Going 6-5 last season, it’s the first time Plainfield has had back-to-back winning seasons since they did it four straight years from 1996 to 1999.

Hutchins told Central Jersey Sports Radio Tuesday he’ll be applying for the post, and he would seem to be a natural fit. He guided this year’s team, of course, and hiring him as the “next” head coach would create a consistency for Plainfield they haven’t had much of before Williams arrived on the scene.

Hutchins played for Williams at East Orange, with his senior season 2006, before committing to and signing to play at Rutgers, later transferring to Stony Brook.

Williams’ three-year tenure at Plainfield – not counting this year, since he wasn’t on the sidelines – yielded a 16-16 record. In the ten years prior, under five different coaches, Plainfield went a combined 15-80.

Plainfield’s Williams got full buy-in from Cardinals as program has roared back to life

Saying this is the best three-year run the Plainfied football team has had in 20 years just doesn’t do what has happened in the Queen City enough justice.

It’s not just the best three-year run the Cardinals have had since they won 18 games from 2003 through 2005, but it comes following a brutal stretch of 16 seasons in which Plainfield went 29-116, only twice managing four wins, never more.

That’s where Plainfield has come from.

But now, in Year Three under head coach James Williams, the Cards are 16-15, with a 6-4 mark this year, their first playoff berth since 2007, and a chance to make even more history.

Thursday, when Plainfield takes on Westfield at Hub Stine Field (11 am, coverage from Marcus Borden on Twitter), the Cardinals will have a chance to beat the Blue Devils for the first time since 2011, their only win in the series dating back to 2005, which also was their third straight win in the series at the time, corresponding with a three-year stretch that saw Plainfield go 18-12 and make the playoffs in two of those three seasons.

Williams’ squad went 5-5 his first year, 5-6 last season, and is 6-4 heading into Turkey Day. But that’s one thing he hasn’t checked off the list yet: beating Westfield.

Correction: A previous version of this article said the last time Plainfield beat Westfield was 2005; it was 2011. The below interview was done using the incorrect date.

Plainfield aiming to build off best season in a decade

It’s been a decade since Plainfield won more than two games in a season, and as long since they last beat Westfield in their annual Thanksgiving Day rivalry.

They didn’t beat the Blue Devils last year, but they did something else big, going .500 for the first time since 2005.

James Williams, now in his second year as head coach, didn’t reinvent the wheel. he worked with what he had. A bunch of kids who don’t get enough credit for their grades, or skill on the field. He put them in different positions to give them the best chance to succeed.

The result was a 5-5 season that has the Cardinals who didn’t graduate believing in themselves heading into 2022. And believe, they should.
