Ala-Meen Watkins scored on the opening play from scrimmage, while E.J. Brown set up his own one-yard touchdown run on the second quarter with a longer scamper of his own, powering Plainfield to a 14-9 Thanksgiving Day win at Westfield, its first in the rivalry series in 19 years.

After Watkins’ score – on which Plainfield failed to convert the extra point –  Westfield was able to record a safety to cut it to 6-2.

Later, Brown’s TD – and his own run for two – made it 14-2 in the second quarter, before Jake Zemsky’s 55-yard fumble return for a score for Westfield cut it to 14-9.

Neither team scored in the second half on a rainy morning at Kehler Stadium.

The Cardinals had dropped 12 in a row in the series before Thursday’s win, and finish the season 6-4, with the Blue Devils dropping to 5-6.

It’s the first time Plainfield has had back-to-back winning seasons since they did it four straight seasons from 1996-1999.
