2025 Big Central Preview: Patriot Silver Division

Another four-team division, one of the two smallest in the Big Central Conference, there was much parity here a year ago, with everyone winning at least four games.

A.J. Johnson out of Clark comes in as the defending champion, going 7-2 overall, 3-0 in the division. And Anthony Del Conte is gone as head coach, with Athletic Director Gus Kalikas stepping into the role. He’ll have his son, Jack, running the triple-option at QB for the Crusaders.

Second-place New Providence went all the way to a sectional final last year, finishing 9-3 overall. While they lose QB T.J. Munn, A.J. Whitehead is a key skill player who returns.

Metuchen also had a fine 2024 and head coach and alum Jordan Leitner’s team is tough. They’ll compete again, while Roselle won four games despite Tyrone Turner not joining the team as head coach until late in the game.

2024 Big Central Preview: Patriot Silver Division

Like the Patriot Gold Division, the Big Central Conference’s Patriot Silver is another four-team division of mid-sized schools. AL Johnson, New Providence, Roselle and Metuchen all come back, while defending champion Hillside moved out and up.

The Crusaders out of Clark were 6-3 last year, and should compete again for the division title with a veteran quarterback in Robert Gallagher who started as a junior in 2023. New Providence should also challenge, hoping to flip some close losses last year into victories in 2024.

Roselle will have a new coach in Tyrone Turner, former co-defensive coordinator at Plainfield, replacing Ibrahim Halsey, who left to take over for Joe Goerge at South Brunswick.

Metuchen is the only Middlesex County school in the bunch. The Bulldogs were beset by injuries last year, but still finished 5-5, following a 1-5 start.

2023 Big Central Preview: Patriot Silver

When you consider an eight-win team finished fourth in a five-team division last year, you might consider that parity.

That was Roselle, which went 8-3 in 2022, but with all three of those losses coming in the division, against only one win in the Patriot Silver.

There was clearly a defined best team – Hillside – and the one that needed work – Metuchen – but all in all, this year, with the Bulldogs now in Year 2 for alum Jordan Leitner, and the Comets losing D-1 talent nearly all over the field, the ends of that spectrum may be closer.

And that big question mark surrounding the Patriot Silver also includes all the teams in between. There’s the aforementioned Roselle, which should be right in the mix again. AL Johnson will be very experienced, and so will New Providence.

It could all just come down to who’s better any given Friday night with this bunch.
