Phillipsburg wins 750th game, remains No. 1 in Marcus Borden’s Week 2 Top Ten… plus rankings for BCC West, Middlesex and Union Counties

If anyone was wondering who would pick up the the reins of the Phillipsburg football program after being hit hard by graduation this past June, fear not Stateliner fans, the cupboard is not bare!

In a dominant performance at Hunterdon Central this past Friday, a packed house at Stewart Field found out how Phillipsburg’s defense would force the Red Devils to punt just 1:05 into the game, then score on a Sam Dech 11-yard run after a faking punt on their first series.

The Stateliners would race out to a 34-7 halftime lead with Dech scoring again and fellow backfield mate Zihyan McGurn scoring on two long runs while sophomore quarterback Dominic Bracco found Jaysen Blacknall on a deep strike over the middle.

Dech would score two more times in the third quarter with a running clock as he and the starters were relegated to cheering on their second team brothers on offense and defense in the final stanza. The backups put the finishing touches on a 55-14 victory which should send a clear message to their future opponents: WE DIG!

Saturday afternoon’s game between the Roselle Rams and the Metuchen Bulldogs was ultimately decided in the final three minutes of the contest.

Metuchen trailed 12-7 in the fourth quarter, forcing the visiting Rams to punt with 6:02 remaining in the game. They would begin their drive at the Roselle 45-yard line.

After a short run the Bulldogs took to the air along the Roselle sideline while getting first down by a pass interference call on the Ram’s defender. On the very next play the Roselle defender was called for defensive holding as Metuchen took to the air again.

Metuchen would milk the clock running on four consecutive plays with quarterback Cam Hayes-Durina getting a first down to the five-yard line. A counter play to Josiah Bourne would get the ball to the one-yard line with 1:49 on the clock.

Bourne would not get up and the training staff would work on comforting the senior running back, placing his leg in an air cast. Both teams were at their sidelines until Josiah was loaded on a stretcher and wished well by his teammates. The game would resume after a brief warm-up by both squads.

Metuchen would line-up at the Roselle 1-yard line as the signal for play allowed the Bulldogs to let the clock run down while Hayes-Durina would bully his way into the end zone, putting the Bulldogs up 13-12 with 1:20 remaining in the game.

Roselle would go offsides on the point after attempt allowing the home team to go for a two-point conversion, which would force the Rams to score a touchdown or kick a field goal to tie the game. But Metuchen would fail to cross the goal line as the Rams were up to the challenge.

Roselle was ready for the squib kick and took the ball around their forty-five yard line. After an incomplete pass, the Rams would run a quick screen to Raekwon Anderson who would get the ball to the Metuchen 35 yard line.

After another incomplete pass, Anderson would catch an out route from quarterback Deion Nelson, getting the ball out of bounds. Roselle would call a timeout with 43 seconds on the clock.

The Rams would run a screen to their sideline getting out of bounds with :27 left in the game and the ball on the Metuchen 19-yard-line. Nelson would then loft a prayer to Anderson on a fade pattern to the end zone with two Bulldog defenders in position to intercept the ball.

The Rams’ junior receiver went up and maintained his focus on the ball as it was tipped into his hands while he got both feet down for the touchdown resulting in a wild celebration on the Roselle sideline.

With 18 seconds remaining on the clock, the Rams two-point attempt would fail, keeping the score 18-13. A penalty would allow the Rams to squib the ball down the field with senior Kevin Sanchez recovering the fumbled kick, securing Roselle’s first win of the season.

Old Bridge moves up; Bridgewater-Raritan, Hunterdon Central, St. Joseph-Metuchen join Marcus Borden’s Week 1 Top Ten… plus rankings for BCC West, Middlesex and Union Counties

We are fully underway in the Big Central, with every team playing in Week One, as fifteen teams who did not start the season in Week Zero made their debut.

This past Friday, I was in Somerville for the clash between the Pioneers and the Cougars of Cranford. Both teams were hit heavy by graduation and were still putting the pieces to the puzzle together with a new cast of underclassmen and a few seniors who were returning with game experience.

Cranford would get on the board first as junior quarterback Aiden Capizzi found fellow classmate John Fiore Jr. on a five-yard touchdown pass after an 8:12 long drive in the first quarter for a 6-0 advantage.

Somerville wasted little time in taking the lead 7-6 after a 42-yard burst to the end zone by senior Aidan Vesuvio-Bush with 8:55 left in the second quarter.

Both teams traded punts as the defenses stiffened up and it seemed the Pioneers would punt once more with 55.7 seconds before halftime after a Cranford sack and a stop on a third down run.

Cougar senior Joseph Acinapura would block the Somerville punt and return in for a score as Cranford went in at halftime with a 12-7 lead.

Vesuvio-Bush would give the Pioneers a 15-12 lead with 6:30 to go in the third quarter with his three-yard score in the Wildcat and subsequent two-point conversion from the same formation.

Somerville would add to its lead when Vesuvio-Bush would score once more on a one-yard run adding to his final tally of 182 total yards on the night. The PAT failed making it 21-12 with about seven minutes remaining in the game.

Cranford would have one more opportunity to close the gap as they had third and goal on the Pioneer five-yard line. With Somerville junior defensive end Nikhai Smith pressuring the quarterback, sophomore James Hampton intercepted the errant pass taking it 103 yards to pay dirt while helping his team to improve to 2-0 in the early season.

On Saturday, Hillside faced visiting Bernards in first-year head coach Isa Abdul-Quddus’ debut at Conant Street Park.

The visiting Mountaineers would get on the board first. Junior quarterback Nolan Ryan would find senior running back Logan Stevens on a swing pass towards the Bernards bench as he sidestepped several Comet defenders and sprinted to the end zone for a 25-yard score with 7:29 left in the first quarter.

Hillside would threaten with Kamari Robinson running the ball and quarterback Jayden Ashford mixing in the pass. The Comets would miss a 35-yard FG attempt late in the first quarter.

Bernards would add to its lead with a 37-yard field goal by junior Daniel Nagy-Lewis with 6:09 to go before halftime as there was a storm brewing behind the Hillside home side bleachers.

Kamari Robinson stepped up his game as the the physical shifty back would score on a 14-yard run play with two minutes and five second before halftime and closing the gap to 10-7.

Both teams would intercept passes with Bernards taking a knee to end the half up 10-7.

With the game being called due to heavy rain and multiple lightening strikes, it was decided to resume play on Sunday at 11 a.m. Unfortunately I was unable to attend the finale as I was in Brick for a 7U tackle game at 9 a.m. But the Mountaineers closed it out, winning 24-14.

Knights win at Rowan in The Battle at the Beach

Marcus Borden unveils his Top Ten after Week 0 play in the Big Central

I had the pleasure to cover two BCC teams that played on Friday and Saturday at Rowan University in The Battle at the Beach.

On Friday, Hillsborough faced Washington Twp. in a Group 5 matchup with the 2024 state semifinalist Minutemen, who lost to powerhouse Toms River North, which finished 14-0 last season and won its third straight Group 5 title.

The senior-laden South Jersey team dominated the Raiders 43-12 sending a message to their future opponents that their goal is to win each week as they look to get back to the playoffs so they can make another championship run.

Saturday, Old Bridge faced Cedar Creek in a late-afternoon battle of heavy weights, which was a seven-point game late in the fourth quarter until senior quarterback Brody Nugent somehow escaped the grasp of a plethora of Pirates and raced to the end zone. That made the score 21-7 with about three minutes remaining in the game.

Nugent scored three times and was named MVP and “Hat” winner by local sportswriter Mark Trible, host of the South Jersey Football Frenzy Show.

CJSR analyst Marcus Borden announces his preseason All-Big Central Team for 2025

As the football analyst for Central Jersey Sports Radio I can say that I saw 44 of the 59 teams in 2024, whether it was at practice, a scrimmage or a game.

I have been west to see the Stateliners of Phillipsburg, north to witness the Hilltoppers of Summit, the Vikings of Voorhees and the County Seaters of Belvidere.

There are so many outstanding young men who will make a name for themselves as this year unfolds. Your accomplishments will not go unnoticed.

I will continue to recognize the top weekly performers and will do so for the entire BCC. This will include offense, defense and special teams performers. Please make sure your statistics are available.

It is now my pleasure to introduce my first preseason All-Big Central Big Team for 2025.

As a reminder to all the players in the 59 BCC football playing schools, what matters most is not how you start the season, it is how you finish it! Best of luck to all the players and coaches.

Marcus Borden unveils his preseason Big Central Conference – and new regional – Top Tens for ’25

These past two weeks of the Big Central Camp Caravan have been exciting and eye -opening for those who follow high school football.

It has been my pleasure to witness six schools during the first week of official practice which included Perth Amboy, Montgomery, Old Bridge, St. Thomas Aquinas, Hunterdon Central and Bernards.

I am extremely grateful to all the coaches who welcomed me and afforded me the opportunity to interview their players and themselves. I met many outstanding leaders who shared their team’s philosophy and vision for the upcoming season.

Scrimmage week was just what I expected with high energy, team bravado and a much needed opportunity to hit someone in a different color jersey.

The Monday quad scrimmage at Colonia H.S. with Rahway, Carteret and North Brunswick was fast and furious, even though the temperatures were only in the seventies.

Tuesday’s quad scrimmage at Metuchen also featured Manville, Spotswood and Point Pleasant Beach. Small school football is just as intense with the number of players on each roster a tad bit smaller.

Thursday at Union saw the Eagles of Edison and the host Farmers simulate game conditions. Both teams showed potential and looked to find the guys who could be quality backups at all positions.

Friday the Caravan traveled to North Plainfield as the Canucks hosted neighboring Dunellen in similar game-like conditions. The Destroyers looked to have about 40 players on their roster which is nearly double what they had last season. Both teams showed big play capability and intensity.

The last stop of the 2025 preseason Camp Caravan was at Hillsborough, where the Raiders played two full quarters of game conditions with Elizabeth. Both teams have several returning starters, which was evident with their quality of play.

So, now you will ask me, “Why isn’t my school in your Week Zero Top 10?”

Well as the football analyst for Central Jersey Sports Radio, I have had the honor to see all 59 teams during my stint as a sideline reporter/videographer.

It is not an exact science, nevertheless, I can say their are some teams who are perennially in the mix for the playoffs and post-season championships.

If I may, just let me remind you of this, it is not where you start the season, it is where you finish it!

Good luck to all 59 Big Central Conference football programs in 2025. Keep working hard!

Marcus Borden’s Camp Caravan 2025: Week 1 Notebook

Week One (August 11-16) of the Caravan was hot and humid with the temperatures up significantly after last week’s fall-like high 70’s or low 80’s depending where you were!

Monday morning, I kicked off the 2025 preseason at Perth Amboy’s Waters Stadium, which is about a mile from the new High School located at 931 Convery Boulevard.

The message was clear from the leadership, we have a new high school and a new attitude.

Junior quarterback Amaris Peguero took it upon himself to run summer captains practice in Albert G. Waters Stadium. He emphasized the importance of turning the page on last season and the need to be positive no matter what the situation.

Camp Caravan – Week 1

Fellow captains junior Ricardo Henriquez as well as seniors Tyler Pedrosa and Cesar Marquez made sure to let everyone know the Panthers plan to take each week to prove themselves by being prepared, confident and having each others back throughout the season.

You can interpret their drive or purpose as ganas in Spanish, which they will have on full display when they kick off the season August 29 at home versus J.F. Kennedy.

Tuesday’s stop at Montgomery High School ironically started with me meeting Eric Legrand’s nephew Xavier Harrington, a junior wide receiver and defensive back. I had no idea that he was a member of the Cougars football team.

The Cougars entered the stadium and began practice with an offensive walk through of plays and formations. Each player wore a jersey that quickly identified their status in the program: white was worn by the freshmen, green by sophomores and juniors, gold for the seniors and black for the captains.

Yes, there were quarterbacks in red except returning captain and senior Jack Kristjanson, who wore black. I recommended he wear a red undershirt or red Guardian cap as to remind the defense it’s hands off during practice or scrimmages.

First year head coach Sean Carty had the practice well-scripted and on the clock as the scoreboard was used to indicate when the periods ended. This is only the 3rd school I have seen do this while on the road for Camp Caravan. Delaware Valley and Old Bridge have had similar success over the years.

Montgomery is poised to rebound after last year’s disappointing season with a solid group of talented seniors led by Mike Bellamy, Trey McFadden, Dragomir Georgiev, Brian Gambia and Aidan Mireider who will join Kristjanson as they prepare for their opener at Hopewell Valley.

Old Bridge senior QB Brody Nugent. (Photo: Marcus Borden)

Wednesday’s 6:30 a.m. practice at Bob DeMarco Stadium in Old Bridge saw about 90 players in half-pads with the offense in black and defense in purple.

Matt Donoghue began his fourth campaign as head football coach on his birthday with the most talented team the Knights have had in some time. Old Bridge was 7-4 in 2024, having lost four games by a combined 10 points which included a playoff contest against Cherokee.

With dual-threat senior quarterback Brody Nugent at the helm, the Knights looked impressive in just their third preseason practice. They have size on the line and skill players who can take it to the house if you pay too much attention to their Houdini-like signal caller.

The focus of this group is to return to the playoffs with the goal of earning the right to play for a championship. With that being said, don’t be surprised to see Nugent in a variety of positions on offense and defense.

Senior captains Jayden Endaz, Tommy Kasoff and Justin Valinotti prefer to let their shoulder pads do the talking on defense as they prepare to open up the season at Rowan University on Saturday August 30 at 3:00 pm against a talented Cedar Creek team in the Battle at the Beach.

St. Thomas Aquinas senior TE/LB Anwar Witherspoon. (Photo: Marcus Borden)

Thursday the Trojans of St. Thomas Aquinas were on the field at 9 a.m. following a team meeting prior to practice. First year head coach Shamir Bearfield used a small white megaphone to be sure his players heard him over the music playing on the grass field behind the stadium fencing.

There was plenty of energy as the players moved quickly between drills and scripted periods which covered every phase of the game.

Linebacker Anwar Whitherspoon Jr., a University of Buffalo commit, showed why he is one of the state’s top defenders while only being in half pads. His vocal leadership was evident as he encouraged his teammates to give the maximum effort.

Senior Channon Johnson, a stalwart on the offensive and defensive line was equally impressive as he and his fellow linemen will look to protect sophomore quarterback Zymere Weaver who has proven to be an accurate passer in some big games last year.

St. Thomas Aquinas has not shied away from the competition as they will travel to Montclair, host Catholic Memorial (MA) and Paramus Catholic while finishing the season at Pope John in Sparta.

The Trojans 31-game winning streak against Big Central Conference opponents may have its most serious threat on September 26 when they host a pretty talented team, the Elizabeth Minutemen.

Hunterdon Central QB Drew Cella takes a snap during preseason camp in Flemington on August 15, 2025. (Photo: Marcus Borden)

Friday’s 8 a.m. start at Hunterdon Central was a bit more humid with a slight breeze in Stewart Field, the Home of the Red Devils.

I was greeted by former head coach, Jim Meert, who is the offensive line coach for Casey Ransone, who is entering his ninth season as the team’s mentor.

Expectations are high for this year’s senior class led by returning quarterback Drew Cella who is confident that when he gets the ball into the hands of fellow senior James Mongno, goods things are going to happen. This was clearly on display during the team’s second day in full pads.

The Red Devils mixed it up with positional drill work, a tackling circuit, no huddle skeleton pass period with the plays signaled from the sidelines as well as some well-choreographed offensive and defensive scripted play sequences.

Junior Jayden Cozze was impressive as a defender during the defense’s Skelton Pass session and in the full team scout offense versus the first team defense. Seniors Kasey Kingsley, Nick Vasquez and Mike White all bring experience and leadership to a team that opens their season at rival North Hunterdon in the Battle of Route 31.

The real hitting begins for Hunterdon Central on Monday August 18 as they will travel to South Brunswick for a tri-scrimmage at 10 am. This will be their wake-up call and a chance to see where they stack up against the competition.

The 2025 Bernards football coaching staff. (Photo: Marcus Borden)

The final stop of the Week 1 BCC Camp Caravan Tour was Saturday morning at Bernards as the Mountaineers hosted a Red and White intrasquad scrimmage and media day.

The return of a veteran senior class with the physical Thomas Diemar at linebacker who registered 18.5 tackles behind the line of scrimmage and Logan Stevens at running back who amassed nearly 900 yards and 12 touchdowns as a runner and receiver, along with center James Renz, tackle Justin Simpson and guard Finn Osborne has head coach Jon Simoneau looking forward to the upcoming season.

Of course when you add in junior returning quarterback Nolan Walsh’s nearly two thousand yards passing and 18 tosses for scores along with classmate Patrick Carlisle who relishes running you over, the Bernards offense looks to pick up where it left off as it takes on Cranford in a Week 0 contest.

While many pundits might have been surprised by the Mountaineers 12-1 record last season, don’t be fooled by the fact that this small Group 2 school has averaged a 7-3 record over the 18 seasons Jon Simoneau has been in charge of the program. They expect to win and will put in the work to get it done.

Borden’s Camp Caravan Week 2 Scrimmage Schedule is as follows:

Andy (lt.) and Matt (rt.) Seinfeld

Spotswood keeps it in the family, as ex-EB coach Andy Steinfeld joins his son, Matt, as assistant with the Chargers

Chris Meagher believes “he hit a home run” by adding former East Brunswick head football coach Andy Steinfeld to the Chargers coaching staff.

With 31 years of coaching football, five as a head coach, Steinfeld joins his son Matt, affectionately called “Coach Stein” by the Chargers’ players and staff.

Matt Steinfeld enters his fourth season with Spotswood and is a guidance counselor at the high school. He did not play football in high school, but he was a member of the baseball team at East Brunswick.

His first year at Spotswood he was offered a position with the football program and made a smooth transition learning the subtleties of the game while possessing a genuine care for the student athletes he would be coaching or advising for the Chargers.

Now, with the addition of his father to the coaching staff, Matt’s quarterbacks will spend plenty of time meshing with the running backs as Meagher intends to use “Coach Steinfeld” as his running backs coach, while Andy has plenty of experience with the zone read offense.

With returning quarterback Senior Se’mir Tolbert-Brimage orchestrating the offense and Senior Sebastian Saracino, a three-year starter at running back, the Steinfelds will play an integral role in the team’s offensive development and success.

Furthermore, Spotswood’s mentor intends to utilize his most experienced assistant coach in the press box on game day as he will be “my eyes in the sky,” since Andy brings a wealth of knowledge, which includes playing for championships in December.

Watch CJSR analyst Marcus Borden talk with Spotswood assistant Andy Steinfeld.

As for Matt, he will be on the sidelines as the Special Teams Coordinator, with the responsibility of getting the correct personnel on the field when needed in a timely fashion.  He will also have time to personally talk to his quarterbacks as they come off the field about any reads or adjustments needed for the offense.

When asked about how unique this opportunity was to coach with his father, Coach Stein said “I may not have the words right now, but one day we are going to look back on this and it’s going to be cool.  I get to coach with the man I idolized growing up.”

Watch CJSR analyst Marcus Borden talk with Spotswood assistant coach Matt Steinfeld.

For Andy, it was a no-brainer to accept the offer to coach at Spotswood for several reasons. They are a talented team with plenty of experience and the desire to take the program to new heights, but more importantly, it was the chance to coach with his son.

“There is nothing better than working every day with my son. To see him coach a sport he didn’t play, I can be a proud dad and if I can end my career as a coach doing it with Matt, there is not a better situation for me personally.”

As the season gets underway in earnest on August 11, the Chargers will have a practice run with the experienced eyes of Coach Steinfeld in the press box as they take on South Plainfield in a final tune-up before their season opener at home on Thursday August 28 at 7 p.m.

NJSIAA Group 4 Championship

Phillipsburg and St. Thomas Aquinas take No. 1 spots in Coach Borden’s final Big Central Conference and GMC 2024 Top Tens

It is hard to believe the 2024 football season has come to an end with the finals of Group 2 and Group 4 Championships which were held at Rutgers this past Wednesday.

Phillipsburg was the first Big Central Conference team to advance to an Overall Group Championship game in the league’s short history.

When I began the BCC Camp Caravan Tour on August 12, my goal was to be sure I saw all 59 teams over the last two years, whether it was at a preseason practice, scrimmage or game. Mission accomplished!

This year I was able to see in person 48 of the 59 teams in the aforementioned scenarios and 2 others in a 7 vs 7 Passing Tournament.

I am also grateful to Joe Bellamy of Bellamy & Sons Paving, Carleigh Stillwagon of Elite Custom Apparel and Bob Trivosonno of Metro Team Sports for helping me honor 59 players from the BCC as members of the 2024 Borden’s Ballers Football Team.

A BIG THANK YOU TO MIKE PAVLICHKO & THE CREW AT CJSR!

Happy Holidays to all the Coaches, Players, Team Managers and your families!
