The two remaining non-public baseball teams in the Central Jersey Sports Radio coverage area have both been eliminated from the state tournament, as St. Joseph of Metuchen took a 6-3 loss at Christian Brothers Academy and St. Thomas Aquinas lost 2-0 up at Montclair-Kimberley.
That leaves six remaining CJSR-area teams in the playoffs – all public schools: Old Bridge, Hillsborough, Ridge, Colonia, South Plainfield, and Middlesex – and they will all play Thursday in sectional title games. Scroll down for the full schedule, along with our coverage plans for all four games.
Here’s the Wednesday recap.
NON-PUBLIC SOUTH A
(1) Christian Brothers Academy 6, (4) St. Joseph-Metuchen 3: There was no late rally or walkoff win this time for the Falcons, who had won the GMC Tournament with four wins, all coming in walkoff fashion. St Joe’s (16-7) actually got on the board first in this one, as Bobby Christensen came in from third on a wild pitch with Luke Palermo at the plate, but CBA got two in the bottom of the inning to take a 2-1 lead on a sac fly by Dylan Iwanyk and a single by Daniel Russo. They added another in the third on another RBI single by Russo, then two more in the fourth on a double by Jared Matejicka and a single from Will Fahey to take a 5-1 lead. St. Joseph got closer in the top of the sixth when Logan Ring hit a two-run homer, his first of the season. But Iwanyk singled home another run in the bottom of the sixth. Richard Zangara took the loss for the Falcons.
NON-PUBLIC NORTH B
(1) Montclair-Kimberley 2, (4) St. Thomas Aquinas 0: The Trojans gave up two runs in the bottom of the first in a pitchers’ duel, as that was all any team would get. Louis Rizzolo struck out nine and gave up two earned runs, striking out six in taking the loss. MKA got the first two hitters on via walk, but one was caught stealing before Alesandro Rizio homered to make it 2-0 Cougars. The Trojans managed just three hits in the game, and the GMC White Division Champions finish 16-9 on the year.
