Sayreville, South Plainfield, Monroe boys win their holiday tourneys as 2024 winds down

A number of Greater Middlesex Conference boys’ basketball teams claimed their own tournament titles on Monday, as things start to wrap up before the New Year.

Here’s a closer look at who won what in Monday action.

Sayreville sweeps Battle at the Bomb Shelter…

In their own Battle at the Bomb Shelter tournament, No. 10 Sayreville took the title, culminating with a 53-51 overtime win over Union Monday afternoon in Parlin.

Sayreville led by six at the half, but saw Union get to within one after three, and they went to OT tied at 49.

Junior Chidi Chukwurah led all scorers with 21 points, while Keithan Shuler added 11 for the Bombers, who are 5-1 heading into 2025. They’ll resume play Thursday with a GMC White Division game at North Brunswick at 5:30 pm.

In the consolation game, New Brunswick (1-3) lost 40-27 to Tottenville (NY).

No. 9 South Plainfield stays undefeated with sweep in Cotoia Tournament…

A 51-43 win over Edison in their own Anthony J. Cotoia Tournament Monday afternoon has the Tigers still unbeaten at 5-0.

The game was tight until the third quarter – it was 22-21 Eagles at the half – until the Tigers clamped down on defense and outscored Edison 14-5 in the third quarter to take an eight point lead. Andrew Bena and Boresa Jawula each led South Plainfield with 14 points, tying Edison’s Dheeraj Samparaboyina for game-high honors.

The Tigers are back in action at Morris Knolls at 7 pm Thursday, while Edison is at Spotswood Saturday at noon.

In the consolation game, it was JFK getting by McNair, 65-63.

Monroe wins Falcon Holiday Tournament over Shore opponent…

Turns out a holiday tournament was just what the doctor ordered for the Falcons. After an 0-2 start, Monroe beat South Brunswick Friday in the opener, then topped Matawan 55-37 Monday in the championship game, to even up its record at 2-2 heading into 2025.

Four players scored in double figures for Monroe, with Braeden Hoiberg matching Matawan’s Amir Martinez with 18 points for game-high honores. Taran Singh added 11 for the Falcons, while Logan Fotiadis and Joe Porpora each scored ten.

Monroe visits No. 1 Colonia on Thursday at 6 pm.

Timothy Christian beat South Brunswick 64-58 in the Consolation Game.
