With girls’ holiday tournaments wrapping up across the area, nearly two dozen Central Jersey Sports Radio area teams closed out 2024 on Monday.
Here’s a look at girls’ basketball action in events throughout New Jersey:
No. 4 Gill St. Bernard’s closes year strong at Holiday Hoopfest in Holmdel…
The Knights swept all three games at the Holiday Hoopfest down at St. John Vianney during the holiday break, capping it with a 66-41 win over St. Rose of Belmar, two days after Rutgers Prep fell to the Purple Roses by five. The victory improves Gill to 6-1, that lone loss coming to the Argonauts back on December 17th.
Senior Gandy Malou-Mamel poured in a game-high 20 points, and finished the tournament with a 22 point per game average, scoring 26 against Immaculata Heart Saturday, and 20 against host St. John Vianney Thursday. Tessa Lozner added 11 points, going 5-for-5 at the foul line.
The Knights (6-1) return to action Saturday at the Garden State New Years Ball at DePaul Catholic in Wayne against two-time defending State Non-Public Group B Champion Morris Catholic at 4:30 pm.
Also in the Holiday Hoopfest, No. 1 Rutgers Prep closed out with a win, taking down Immaculate Heart 59-40 to go 2-10 in Holmdel. Newcomer Sophia Georgiades scored a career high 24 points, including four treys, while also grabbing four steals. Ava Frith finished with eight points and eight rebounds, as the Argonauts improved to 6-1. They are back in action Sunday in the Blue Star Media Showcase in Philadelphia against Upper Dublin.
In other Holiday Hoopfest action, Franklin fell to Bayonne, 60-37. Host St. John Vianney was a 62-27 winner over Montclair-Immaculate, Union City topped Morristown 35-31, and Trenton rolled past Passaic, 47-64.
Old Bridge perfect at Woodbridge Holiday Tournament
The Knights were the only team to win all three of their games at the Woodbridge Holiday Tournament, doing so after starting the year 0-2. They’re now 3-2 with a 34-24 win Monday over Edison in the opening game of the third and final day.
The Knights had balanced scoring, with no one hitting double-figures in the low-scoring affair; Adriana Misciagna and Mailyn Togun finished with 8 points apiece for Old Bridge, while Olivia Smart led all scorers with 11 for Edison (4-3).
Game Two of the day saw No. 10 Spotswood knock off No. 5 Piscataway, 49-40, behind a career-high 25 points from sophomore Gabrielle Hill. The Chargers went 2-1 at the tournament, and improved to 5-2 with the win, while the Lady Chiefs (3-1) took their first loss of the season.
And Colonia won its second straight since starting the season 0-4, beating cross-town rival Woodbridge 50-43, behind 19 points from Ariana Sosa. Three Patriots finished in double figures, as Ivana Gidado scored 11 and Nashawlah Hooker finished with ten. Angel Smith of the Barrons (0-5) led all scorers with 20, and had seven rebounds in defeat.
