As Edison finds itself, Eagles beat Paterson Eastside to move up in South 5… for now

There will still be some scoreboard watching on the Boulevard of the Eagles Friday night and Saturday afternoon, but the Edison football team held up its end of the bargain Friday night.

Heading into Cutoff Weekend in 15th place in the South Group 5 supersection, Edison improved to 5-4 with a 46-28 win over visiting Paterson Eastside Thursday evening.

The Eagles led 26-7 at the half, but the Ghosts kept chipping away, and Edison had to keep scoring.

And they did, as Nykier Eato scored four touchdowns – three rushing, one receiving – to lead the offense. Quarterback Anthony Calantoni threw a pair of touchdown passes, while Dedrick Harvey had a touchdown catch and a run, and Lenier Whetstone also added another TD run.

Edison now will wait out two Big Central teams behind them, as well as a host of others who will determine their playoff fate. The two league teams also fighting for a spot include Hunterdon Central (4-4) and Franklin (4-4). The Warriors dropped to 15 with the loss, while the Red Devils held at 14 ahead of Friday’s game at red-hot Hillsborough (5-3). Franklin hosts North Brunswick (1-7).
