Top-seeds Bridgewater-Raritan, Old Bridge among playoff winners as public state tourney kicks into high gear

Bridgewater-Rartitan and Old Bridge – top seeds in their respective North 2 and Central Jersey Group 4 sections – were among the winners Thursday as the public portion of the NJSIAA state baseball tournament really got going.

Now with a 24-3 record, the victory total for Bridgewater-Raritan set a new Panther program record.

South Brunswick, Sayreville, Edison and Colonia also advanced with wins Thursday.

Some public schools moved their games to Wednesday ahead of thunderstorms in the forecast for Thursday. Others that didn’t jump the gun had to move games to Friday when their fields got soaked by a big morning rain storm.

A half dozen area teams haven’t opened up yet. Among the CJSR-area teams now playing Friday:

• (15) Manasquan at (2) Spotswood in Central Jersey Group 2 (noon)
• (13) Keansburg at (4) South Amboy in Central Jersey Group 1 (4 pm)
• (12) Piscataway at (5) Phillipsburg in North 2, Group 4 (1:30 pm)
• (15) Franklin at (2) Scotch Plains-Fanwood in North 2, Group 4 (2 pm)
• (16) Cliffside Park at (1) South Plainfield in North 2, Group 3 (2 pm)

Also Thursday, third-seed Gill St, Bernard’s and sixth-seed Morristown-Beard played their Non-Public North B quarterfinal game early, with the Knights beating Mo-Beard 8-0 to advance to the sectional semifinals – to be held next Thursday, where they’ll face either 10-seed Timothy Christian or second-seed St. Thomas Aquinas. The game will be held at the higher seed.
