Of the 16 girls basketball teams from the Central Jersey Sports Radio coverage area opening play Wednesday in the NJSIAA state tournament, seven advanced to Monday’s sectional quarterfinal round, to be played at higher seeds
Old Bridge, Monroe and South Brunswick moved on in Central Jersey Group 4, while Ridge, Franklin and Hillsborough moved on in North 2, Group 4, and Metuchen advanced in Central Jersey Group 2 play.
In Central 4, 8th-seed Old Bridge will visit top-seed Hightstown on Monday, and we get our first all-GMC matchup ion the section, as 6th-seed South Brunswick will visit 3-seed Monroe. The two teams split in the regular season, with Monroe winning on opening night, the Vikings winning the rematch just before the GMC Tournament.
North 2, Group 4 saw 13th-seed Ridge pull an upset. The Red Devils knocked off fourth-seed JP Stevens, 57-44, coming back from a 26-22 halftime deficit behind an 18-point, 16-rebound double-double from Emma Landes, and 15 points from Sophia Georgiades. And 2-seed Hillsborough will host 7th-seed Hunterdon Central in an all-Skyland Conference sectional quarterfinal Monday.
