Chalk one up for the GMC White Division.
Sixth-seed South Plainfield hit key buckets down the stretch to beat third-seed Monroe 53-46 Saturday morning in the Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament quarterfinals at Piscataway High School.
The Tigers will move on to play the winner of Saturday’s finale, 7-seed Woodbridge against 2-seed Colonia, in the 4 pm game.
Naim Mouzon led South Plainfield (17-6) with 18 points, ten coming in the third quarter, to help give the Tigers a 41-40 lead heading into the final eight minutes.
Ironically, Piscataway – home of this year’s quarterfinals – was Mouzon’s home until he moved and transferred to South Plainfield this season, where he had to sit out the first 30 days of the season before suiting up.
Monroe, which was firing from three all game and had seven threes in the first 24 minutes, didn’t hit from the arc in the final eight minutes, and was limited to just two field goals.
Myles Marabuto finished with 17 for Monroe (15-7), including three treys, both of which came in the opening quarter.
