Spotswood has one of the shortest histories of any high school in the Greater Middlesex Conference.
The school only opened in 1976, after its high school students spent years attending South River – hence the longstanding rivalry between them.
But in that time, the boys’ and girls’ basketball programs have had some prolific scorers, with 18 crossing the 1,000 point barrier. That includes 13 on the boys’ side, five on the girls’.
All were recognized and honored Saturday between games of a varsity doubleheader, with the girls opening things up with a 57-35 win over Raritan, and the boys finishing it off with a 73-59 victory against Allentown.
The all-time top boys’ scorer is Jake Dadika (2014), with 1,693 points. He’s the son of former Rutgers standout Rick Dadika, who was on the Scarlet Knights’ list conference tournament championship team, the 1988-89 “dream big dreams” squad – coached by Bob Wenzel – that beat Penn State at the RAC for the Atlantic Ten title.
On the girls’ side, it’s Beth Dickinson by a mile, and she is the all-time top scorer regardless of gender, with 2,100 points even, the only one to crack the double-thousand milestone. Dickinson was just inducted into the Spotswood Athletics Hall of Fame last December.
As part of the ceremony, new banners were unveiled with all the players’ names, hung on the walls at the Spotswood Athletic Center.
