Week 7 Saturday Playoff Analysis: Group 2

Almost all the games have been played this weekend – with the exception of KIPP Cooper Norcross-Mastery Charter on Saturday and St. Joe’s Montvale-Bergen Catholic’s big clash on Sunday. The first shouldn’t have much effect on South 1 or South 2, and the Joe’s-BC game won’t affect any public schools.

With that, here’s a look at unofficial standings after games of Saturday, October 14 in Group 2, with results calculated using scores on Gridiron New Jersey as of 5:30 pm on October 14th. Note that last week, Gridiron had to fix some incorrectly-reported scores, so the information below could change.

No change for Bernards in this section. Still with a 4.2 UPR and all the top four teams unbeaten (Westwood, Caldwell, and Rutherford all 1-2-3 at 7-0), they still likely have to beat Governor Livingston next week to finish in the top four. We’re not sure yet if they’ll need help from Newton, which plays 2-5 Sparta next week.

New Providence climbs two spots from Friday night based on Saturday action, as they gained 0.5 in power point average to climb two spots there; they also gained a spot in OSI.

Johnson‘s big weekend continues. They rose Friday night before even setting foot on the field Saturday at Spotswood from 17 to 11, then climbed two more spots with a 48-0 win over the Chargers to ninth place. They’re 0.6 points out of the top eight, guaranteeing a first round home game, which means they could get it rising just one spot in OSI or two in power points.

As for Spotswood, they got lucky – as lucky as you could get losing 48-0 on Homecoming – since everyone else around them seemed to lose. It was the best-case scenario. And with Spotswood about 3 points better than Johnson in SI entering play today, but the Crusaders winning by 48, that beat the margin by over 51 and increased their SI by 10.12 points. So Spotswood gets 5.06 more OSI points than they bargained for! We have them in 13th place, ahead of Delaware Valley in 14th.
