Two area boys’ basketball teams pulled off upsets on Day One of the NJSIAA state tournament, as 12-seed Montgomery knocked off 5-seed Hightstown 73-55 in Central Jersey Group 4 action, while 10-seed Edison won at 7-seed Scotch Plains-Fanwood in North 2, Group 4 play, 69-57.
In all, nine boys’ teams advanced – including top-seed Watchung Hills in North 2, Group 4 – while ten were eliminated. On the girls’ side, nine also advanced, while nine got sent home.
The opening night of the tournament only saw public schools in Groups 2 and 4 play. Groups 1 and 3 begin tomorrow, while Groups 2 and 4 resume Wednesday, which is when all Non-Public schools begin play.
