Top four seeds advance to boys’ GMC Tournament semifinals

All went according to chalk Sunday afternoon and evening in the Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament boys’ quarterfinals at Middlesex County College in Edison. The top four seeds advanced and will play Wednesday in the semifinals, scheduled for 5 and 7 pm at Monroe Township High School.

Fourth-seed Monroe will get to play on its home floor in the opener, as the Falcons take will take on top-seed St. Thomas Aquinas in the nightcap. The opener will feature second-seed St. Joseph-Metuchen against third-seed Colonia.

Monroe (21-3) got by 5th-seed South Brunswick Sunday, 40-36, in a game that saw neither team lead by more than two possessions at any point in the game. Aquinas (24-1) – the third-ranked team in the state – was a 67-39 winner over 9th-seed Piscataway in the last game of the day.

On the other side of the bracket, Colonia (20-3) got 26 points from Saivon Pressley, but no more than nine from anyone else, in a 50-38 win over 6th-seed Edison, in the first game of the day. The second of four saw St. Joseph (19-5) get by 7th-seed South Plainfeld 73-54, led by Ethan Simmon’s 23 points, one of four Falcons who scored in double figures.
