Edison and Woodbridge High Schools are only seven miles apart.
But when they play Monday in the first Opening Day for New Jersey High School Baseball in two years, it will only be the sixth meeting between the two schools since 2010.
You can hear the game LIVE on Central Jersey Sports Radio in our debut of Greater Middlesex Conference Baseball; coverage starts at 3:40 pm, with first pitch at 4:00. Edison will play its second straight season down in the White Division when it begins the 2021 campaign this afternoon, taking on a Barrons team that has a lot of unknowns.
It will also be the first official high school baseball game played on the “brand-new” red and gold field, which was set to go for last season, the season that never happened. All artificial turf, the “grass” areas are Edison red, while the infield, baselines, pitchers’ mound and home plate area is all Edison gold.
For Eagles’ head coach Vinny Abene – now in his 18th season (243-203-1) – the pitching is a bit ahead of the hitting, but he believes they have a good core coming back, including senior shortstop Walker Zampella. Abene calls him one of the best defensive shortstops in the county.
Other returning starters in the lineup include centerfielder Evrin Virola – a senior who has been a starter his entire high school career – and first-baseman/pitcher Sal DellaFave, a junior who led the team in hits and runs batted in during his freshman campaign in 2019.
