Edison returns significant talent, will kick off season today against neighboring Woodbridge

Edison and Woodbridge High Schools are only seven miles apart.

But when they play Monday in the first Opening Day for New Jersey High School Baseball in two years, it will only be the sixth meeting between the two schools since 2010.

Edison will play its second straight season down in the White Division when it begins the 2021 campaign this afternoon, taking on a Barrons team that has a lot of unknowns.

It will also be the first official high school baseball game played on the “brand-new” red and gold field, which was set to go for last season, the season that never happened. All artificial turf, the “grass” areas are Edison red, while the infield, baselines, pitchers’ mound and home plate area is all Edison gold.

For Eagles’ head coach Vinny Abene – now in his 18th season (243-203-1) – the pitching is a bit ahead of the hitting, but he believes they have a good core coming back, including senior shortstop Walker Zampella. Abene calls him one of the best defensive shortstops in the county.

Other returning starters in the lineup include centerfielder Evrin Virola – a senior who has been a starter his entire high school career – and first-baseman/pitcher Sal DellaFave, a junior who led the team in hits and runs batted in during his freshman campaign in 2019.

Central Jersey Sports Radio will debut LIVE H.S. baseball coverage on Opening Day next Monday

Monday, April 19th, will be the first Opening Day for high school baseball in New Jersey in two years, with last year’s entire season wiped out due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

And when the 2021 season begins, Central Jersey Sports Radio will be on hand, kicking off its season coverage.

We’ll begin the slate with a matchup of GMC White Divsion teams, when Edison entertains Woodbridge at 4:00 Monday afternoon. Mike Pavlichko and Chris Tsakonas will call all the live play-by-play at, which you can hear by clicking here. Tentative air time is 3:50 pm from the Boulevard of the Eagles, at the school’s brand-new red turf field.

Athletic Director David Sandaal says the field was under construction last winter and would have been ready to go during the 2021 season.

That season that never materialized. Though some Last Dance baseball tournament games were played there, Monday will be the first time Edison High School’s baseball team gets to take the field.

Sandaal says several dignitaries will be on hand.

Central Jersey Sports Radio will add additional games to the broadcast schedule throughout the season, and Mike Pavlichko will report from other games throughout the year as well.

CJSR also plans to broadcast live from Ray Cipperly Field for the Greater Middlesex Conference Torunament Semifinals and Finals, to be held in late May and early June.

Balanced South Hunterdon attack helps Eagles soar over Metuchen

Four different starters each carried at least 6 times and caught passes from senior quarterback Ryan Hinman, who expertly led South Hunterdon to a 41-7 victory over Metuchen Saturday afternoon, in the “Big Central Game of the Week” powered by Bellamy & Son Paving on Central Jersey Sports Radio.

The victory was just the third of the season for the Eagles (3-4), but you might not have known it with how efficiently their option attack picked apart the Bulldogs (0-5).

Hinman completed his last ten passes to go 10-for-11 for 91 yards and a touchdown. His favorite target was Logan Conner, who caught five passes for 37 yards, including a 5-yard TD. Conner carried 12 times for 63 yards and two touchdowns, while Hinman led the rushing attack with 21 carries for 68 yards and two TDs of his own.

Listen below to all the play-by-play of the game from Saturday, November 14th, 2020, with Mike Pavlichko on the call with guest analyst Harry Frezza.

Devonish-Wynter’s end zone heroics help No. 9 North Brunswick edge out Edison

A controversial interception in the end zone by senior cornerback Jelani Devonish-Wynter helped seal a 21-20 victory for 9th-ranked North Brunswick at Edison.

Devonish-Wynter also caught a 59-yard touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback Frankie Garbolino in the win, which propelled the Raiders to 4-0, their best start since their 2000 undefeated regular season, which ended with an opening round 7-0 playoff loss to Wall.

Mike Pavlichko and Dom Savino have the call on Friday, October 23 from Matthew J. Drwal Stadium in Edison.

Edison coach Matt Fulham talks 2-1 start, Yascko & Yascko, and North Brunswick challenge Friday night

Edison dropped its first game of the year in what some considered to be a shocker to Franklin, 7-6.

Not that anything can be called shocking these days.

But the Eagles responded with a two-point win in Week 2 over Sayreville.

Touche.

This week, it’s a stiff challenge for Edison, which will look to go 3-1 when the Eagles host No. 7 North Brunswick Friday night in the Big Central Game of the Week powered by Bellamy & Son Paving on Central Jersey Sports Radio (7 pm kickoff, 6:50 pregame).
