Doubleheader Friday and Saturday features Somerset and Middlesex County battles

Central Jersey Sports Radio brings listeners two big matchups on the final weekend of the 2020 “regular season” on the “Big Central Game of the Week powered by Bellamy & Son Paving.”

First, Friday night at 7, Mike Pavlichko and Dom Savino will be at Lee Field in Basking Ridge as No. 5 Ridge (4-1) entertains on Hillsborough (3-2, ARV in the media poll).

The Red Devils are paced on the ground by junior Lucas Hudkins rushing for 104.4 yards per game with 5 TDs, while junior quarterback Michael Olivo has run for 493 yards and 6 scores, passing for 595 yards and 9 TD as a dual threat.

Meanwhile, Hillsborough junior signal-caller Jay Mazuera is throwing for 134 yards per game and has 9 TD passes on the year. Senior runningback Sean Levonaitis has two games with over 100 yards to his credit this season, and 7 TD scores.

The series has been closely contested over the years, with the Raiders leading 10-9 with one tie, which came in 1977.

Hillsborough and Ridge played to a surprising 0-0 tie in 1977, a year in which the young Raiders (in only their eighth season as a varsity program) went just 2-6. The tie was the Red Devils only blemish that season, as they went 8-0-1, but lost in opening round/semifinals to eventual Central Jersey Group 3 champion Somerville.

The Ridge game can be heard on Central Jersey Sports Radio with pregame at 6:50. The game also is being streamed live on Ridge’s Hudl channel, which you can watch here, with audio commentary provided by Central Jersey Sports Radio.

Saturday afternoon at 1 at Brenner Family Field in Metuchen, No. 1 Woodbridge (4-0) puts its undefeated mark on the line against St. Joseph (2-2), which has lost two straight – to Union and Ridge – since returning from a COVID-19 stoppage.

The Barrons lead the short all-time series 4-3, but are 1-3 in Metuchen, with their only win coming last season at Brenner Family Field, a 28-12 victory that was the Falcons’ only loss of the regular season in an 8-2 campaign.

Senior Ali Lee, Jr., has rushed for 847 of Woodbridge’s 1,049 yards this season, scoring 9 touchdowns on the ground. He’s also got a receiving touchdown and a kick return for six, which came against Scotch Plains-Fanwood.
