Ridge seniors Callanan, Nicholson and head coach Tom Blackwell talk CJSR Team of the Year honors, as veteran skipper also announces retirement

What a whirlwind year for the Ridge Red Devils baseball team.

They began the year 11-1, with an Opening Day win at West Morris bringing the program its 1,000th victory all-time. Then injuries hit, and they lost five straight in late April. After getting knocked out of the Somerset County Tournament in the semifinals by eventual champion Watchung Hills, they regrouped and rebounded to beat the Warriors in the NJSIAA North 2, Group 4 championship game.

They would fall in the state semifinals, 8-7, on a walk-off home run in extra innings at Ridgewood, but earn the final No. 1 ranking in the Bellamy & Son Paving Top Ten.

After which, head coach Tom Blackwell told his team last week, after 21 years and 20 seasons as the Red Devils’ skipper, he would be retiring. Blackwell went 328-211 from 2006 through 2026 (there was no high school baseball in the COVID year) with his teams winning two Somerset County Titles (2011 and 2022) and two North 2, Group 4 titles in the state tournament (2021 and 2026).

It was the perfect way to end a coaching career, but so much more than that for Blackwell, a Ridge alum who played for the legendary Pete Hall, the namesake of the Red Devils’ baseball field.

In a rollercoaster of a season, Ridge is the 2026 Central Jersey Sports Radio Team of the Year.

Feeney’s solo home run gives Ridgewood 8-7 win in 8 over Ridge in state Group 4 semis

They say all good things must come to an end, and in this case, it applies not just to the game, but to the Ridge baseball team’s season.

The only team from the Central Jersey Sports Radio coverage area to win a sectional title this season saw its 2026 campaign come to an end in dramatic fashion Monday afternoon in Bergen County, as Ridgewood senior Hudson Feeney led off the bottom of the eighth with a solo home run to give the Maroons an 8-7 win over Ridge in the state Group 4 semifinals at Veterans’ park in Ridgewood.

In a game heard live on Central Jersey Sports Radio, each team had plenty of chances, but didn’t always capitalize. Ridge left 13 runners on base, Ridgewood left a dozen. And the Red Devils had the bases loaded in the top of the eighth with two outs, but failed to score.

They almost didn’t get there. Ridgewood led 7-6 going into the top of the seventh, when DH Matt Pypcznske led off with a groundball to third that was booted. Then Toby Nicholson singled to left, but the left fielder Brody Perrapato saw it go off his glove, allowing Pypcznske to score the tying run. Then, on a line drive out to second baseman Justin Loffredo, he nearly got doubled off, but an errant throw – the third miscue of the inning – allowed him to go third. But he was stranded after Kieran Callanan struck out and Lucas Grob flied out to right.

Ridgewood took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second, but Ridge jumped ahead 3-1 in the top of the third. Callanan hit a fly ball to left that was dropped, turning it into a two-base error, and Lucas Grob reached on a throwing error to tie the game at one. Jake Dolan doubled, Casey Kucerka drove in the second run with a groundout to short, and Sawyer Paul reached on a 1-2 fielder’s choice that saw Dolan slide in safely to make it 3-1.

The Maroons added a run in the third, then got four in the top of the fourth – an inning that saw starter Lucas Liston hit three straight batters – but Ridge hung tough and got back in it. They wiped out a 6-3 deficit with three more in the top of the fifth. Kucerka was plunked to lead off the inning, and Sawyer Paul singled. Dimitri Romer doubled to cut it to 6-5, and after two strikeouts, Colin Newcomb singled to tie the game at 6-6.

Ridgewood would take the lead again in the bottom half, getting an RBI single from Alex DeAngelo.

Ridge saw its season end at 17-11, while Ridgewood improved to 24-7, and will face South Jersey Group 4 champion Kingsway in the state Group 4 title game at Rutgers, Sunday at 1 pm. Kingsway was a 9-1 home winner over Hunterdon Central in the other Group 4 semifinal Monday.

The win went to the Maroons’ Brady Ross (4-1) in relief. He threw four innings and allowed four hits, one unearned run, striking out three. Dolan (2-1) took the loss in a three-inning relief effort, his longest of the year in nine appearances.

From a familiar opponent to a complete stranger, North 2, Group 4 champ Ridge travels to Ridgewood for state semis, trip to Group 4 title game

The last Somerset County baseball team to win a state championship was only two years ago, when Bridgewater-Raritan ran the table and won the Skyland Conference Delaware Division, went undefeated in league play, then won the Somerset County Tournament, North 2, Group 4 title, and the state Group 4 championship in the last high school baseball game of the year down in Hamilton.

The road hasn’t been that smooth for the Ridge baseball team, but with a sectional trophy in hand after Friday’s 3-2, come-from-behind win over neighbor Watchung Hills, it’s been one of the more rewarding titles the program has earned over the years.

Ridge players celebrate with their fans along the right field wall after a 3-1 win over Watchung Hills in the North 2, Group 4 final in Basking Ridge on June 5, 2026. (Photo: Mike Pavlichko)

While Immaculata was the Delaware champ, Watchung Hills won the county tournament, and Ridge (17-10) beat them in last Friday’s North 2, Group 4 sectional final, a testament to how challenging that group of six teams was this season.

But now, the focus is on the next opponent: North 1, Group 4 champion Ridgewood in the state Group 4 semifinals. And you can hear that game Monday afternoon at 4 pm – with pregame at 3:45 – as Mike Pavlichko and Alec Crouthamel call all the action live from Bergen County. Click here to listen.

The Maroons (23-7) are a solid-hitting team with very good pitching. And like Ridge, they have had some unsung heroes this year. Consider the North 1, Group 4 final against Passaic Tech, the top-seed. Third-seed Ridgewood jumped on the Bulldogs early. Despite falling behind 1-0 in the bottom of the first, they got three in the second and two in the third to take a 5-1 lead that they would never relinquish.

One big reason: Kotaro Kim, a senior right fielder who hit a huge three-run homer in the fourth, after PCTI had cut the deficit to 5-2. He was also the hero in the semifinals, belting a go-ahead two-run homer in the top of the eighth at second-seed Mount Olive, a team that earlier in the year had taken out state-ranked No. 1 Delbarton in the Morris County Tournament championship game.

So, this Ridgewood team is no joke. But then again, neither is Ridge.

In the sectional title game, Jake Dolan – who had not even thrown eight innings in relief all season coming in – got an inning-ending double play to end the top of the sixth, then shut down Watchung Hills 1-2-3 in the seventh after the Red Devils scratched across a run in the bottom of the sixth for a 3-2 lead.

Others, like senior Matt Pypcznski, have stepped in at key moments due to injury, while fellow senior Sawyer Paul seems to keep getting big hits at the plate, and also plays a solid first base.

Rigde had had a lot of contributions from everyone in the lineup this year. And if they can do that in one more game, they’ll get a chance to play for a state title.

This will be the first meeting between the schools in at least Ridge head coach Tom Blackwell’s 20-plus year tenure as head coach.

Who’s next?

The winner of the Ridge-Ridgewood game moves on to the state Group 4 final, scheduled as part of a quadruple-header next Sunday afternoon at 1 pm at Rutgers University’s Bainton Field on the Livingston Campus in Piscataway – across from Jersey Mike’s Arena.

They will face the winner of the other Group 4 semifinal. That features Central 4 champion third-seed and fellow Skyland Delaware foe Hunterdon Central (18-13) and South 4 champion and top-seed Kingsway 23-5).

Hunterdon Central and Ridge – they’re both the Red Devils, of course – split a pair this year. Central won the first meeting, 12-7, at Ridge on April 7th, putting up a five-spot in the second inning. Ridge had cut the deficit to 6-4 by the fourth, but Hunterdon added another six in the sixth.

But Ridge returned the favor two days later with a 9-5 win out in Flemington. Aiden Kerrigan had a 2-for-4 day with four runs batted in, while Toby Nicholson had two RBI, Lucas Liston got the start, and Jake Dolan got the win in relief.

Ridge overcomes 2-0 deficit to beat Watchung Hills, 3-2, for North 2, Group 4 title, program’s 10th sectional crown

Trailing 2-0 heading into the bottom of the fifth, top-seed Ridge tied the North 2, Group 4 title game at two, then scored the go-ahead run on an error in the bottom of the sixth to beat third-seed Watchung Hills 3-1, claiming the Red Devil program’s tenth state sectional championship, and second in the last six years.

Ridge will move on to play at North 1, Group 4 winner Ridgewood in the state Group 4 semifinals Monday at 4 pm. The third-seeded Maroons knocked off top-seed Passaic Tech Friday afternoon in the title game, 10-8.

With a packed crowd that was five or more deep along the fences past the dugouts – and another long stretch of students hanging over the edge of the right field wall, the celebration was a wild one, especially since Ridge had made the finals in this section last year, but lost to Westfield.

In a game heard live on Central Jersey Sports Radio, the deciding run came in the bottom of the sixth with the score tied 2-2. Dimitri Romer walked to lead off the inning, then DH Matt Pypczynske was hit by a pitch. Toby Nicholson came up next, but Ridge saw Romer picked off at third when Hills catcher Jacob Jaconski throw down to the shortstop, who had Romer hung up and threw to third, where Brady Simo applied the tag for the first out.

But Nicholson singled to put two on again. That’s when Colin Newcomb hit a hard but playable shot to short that Stef DiGeronimo booted, making it 3-2 Ridge, the first lead of the game for the Red Devils. And that was all they would get, as Kieran Callanan hit a liner to short, that DiGeronimo snared; he then got Nicholson off second to end the inning with a 6-4 double play.

Jake Dolan had come in from centerfield in the top of the sixth to replace starter Dimitri Romer with one out, and now came out to finish it off against the middle of the Warriors’ order. He got Rob Centamore to ground out to third, Max Payne to fly out to center, and Landon Pudlak to fly out to right to end it, as the Ridge players streamed out of the dugout, caps and empty water bottles flying.

Dolan got the win in relief for Ridge (18-10), while Lucas Sheehan took the loss for Watchung Hills (18-9).

Watchung Hills scored a run in the third, taking a 1-0 lead on an RBI single by Rob Centamore then got another in the top of the fifth. Then, they made it 2-0 in the top of the fifth on a Brady Simo walk with the bases loaded.

But Ridge set themselves up with two in the bottom of the sixth.  With one out, Newcomb singles, and Callanan hit a ball to second, reaching when Landon Pudlal bobbled it. Grob singled to load the bases, and Jake Dolan hit a sac fly to right to cut the deficit in half.  Casey Kucerka then followed with a single to tie it at 2-2, but Sawyer Paul grounded into a fielder’s choice to end it.

Familiar foes, Ridge and Watchung Hills, set to meet for fourth time this season, with North 2, Group 4 title up for grabs

And up for grabs might be the perfect way to describe it.

The Ridge and Watchung Hills baseball teams are quite familiar with each other, especially this season.

They’ve already played three times, and now it’s a rare fourth matchup between the two as they play for the North Jersey, Section 2, Group 4 title in the NJSIAA state playoffs.

First pitch between top-seed Ridge (17-10) and third-seed Watchung Hills (18-8) is set for 4 pm at Pete Hall Field in Basking Ridge, and you can her the game live on Central Jersey Sports Radio, with Mike Pavlichko on the call. Pregame begins at 3:30 pm.

While Ridge last won a title in 2021, this group was in last year’s sectional title game, falling 9-6 to Westfield. But with another year under their belt, they’re right back in for a second straight season. The group is led by Jake Dolan at the plate, the senior centerfielder hitting .444 with a whopping 35 runs batted in and seven home runs. Fellow senior Kieran Callanan is an excellent shortstop, hitting .384.

The Red Devils are expected to put Dimitri Romer on the mound, who made a relief appearance in Wednesday’s 10-6 home win in the semifinals over 5-seed Bridgewater-Raritan. But he threw just 19 pitches in that effort, so he can come back with the full 100-pitch allowance Friday afternoon. Romer is 5-2 on the year, with a 2.47 ERA.

The Warriors will send out Lucas Sheehan, a sophomore who was given the start a couple of Friday’s ago in the Somerset County Tournament title game, a 1-0 win over top-seed Immaculata. He became the first tenth-grader to get a win in the county final since Casey Cahill of Immaculata did it in 1998. He’s 7-2 with a 4.61 ERA.

Offensively, seniors Jacob Jaconski (.464, 16 RBI, 10 doubles) and Rob Centamore (.349, 21 RBI, 10 doubles) are among the leaders, along with senior Max Payne, who’s driven in a team-high 26 runs.

Watchung Hills hasn’t been here in a decade, but they’ve already won one postseason tournament this season. And after a pair of losses, 12-10 and 13-3 in the regular season to Ridge, avenged that en route to the county title.

Ridge gets big 5th inning, still has to fight off Bridgewater-Raritan to advance to second straight sectional final, with 10-6 win over Panthers

Regardless of the score, both top-seed Ridge and fifth-seed Bridgewater-Raritan knew they would be in a dogfight in the North Jersey, Section 2, Group 4 semifinals of the state tournament.

And a dogfight it was.

The Red Devils broke a 3-3 tie in the fifth on a two-RBI single by junior catcher Casey Kurcerka, then added four more to take a 9-3 lead, but still had to hold off the Panthers, who got three in the top of the seventh to keep anyone wearing green – players, coaches, and fans – from any kind of premature celebration until the final out was recorded.

Once it was, it was official: Ridge is off to its second straight sectional final.

But not so much off, as they’ll just have to trudge across the mountain ridge between the high school and Hall Field Friday afternoon to host third-seed Watchung Hills in the title game, after the Hustlin’ Warriors upset two-seed Bayonne, 10-0 by run-rule in five innings, on the road Wednesday afternoon in the section’s other semifinal.

It’ll be their fourth meeting this year, with Ridge winning both regular season meetings, but Watchung Hills taking a 4-2 win in the Somerset County Tournament semifinals, en route to the championship.

Ridge (18-10) got on the board first ion this one, scoring three in the bottom of the third off Bridgewater starter Kellan Komline.

Toby Nicholson and Colin Newcomb – the eight and nine hitters – both singled to start the inning, and Kieran Callanan walked to load the bases. Lucas Grob hit a ball to short, and conceding a run, Cody Rible looked to turn two. he got the force at second, but Grob beat out the throw to first. Jake Dolan doubled to make it 2-0, moving Grob to third, and he came home to score on a wild pitch to give Ridge a 3-0 lead.

But the Panthers (13-17)evened it up in the third. DH Connor Price singled to lead it off, and starter Lucas Liston got a flay out and a pop up for the first two outs of the inning. But he wouldn’t get out of it unscathed. Rible singled, and Komline singled to load the bases. That brought up Andrew Schmeider, who hit a sharp ball to second baseman Lucas Grob, near the bag, who snared it, but stumbled. Price scored from third on the initial hit, but as Grob tried to get up, and then make a throw home, Rible was able to come home well, cutting the deficit to 3-2. Michael Lobosco then hit a ball to center, and Jake Dolan fired to third to get Schmeider for the third out, but not before Komline came in to score, tying the game at three.

Then came the sixth, where Ridge sent eleven men to the plate. With one out, Callanan walked, Grob doubled, and Jake Dolan was intentionally walked. Kucerka broke the tie with a line drive to left to make it 5-3. He and Dolan advanced to second and third on a balk, prompting Max Newill to come out of the dugout and urge Komline to settle down. But Ridge wasn’t done.

Sawyer Paul grounded to third, and third baseman Kevin Kelly threw home, and it beat Dolan, but he slid under the tag to make it 6-3. Dimitri Romer also grounded to third, and this time Kelly got a force at second, but another run came in to make it 7-3. After a single by Matt Pypcznske, Toby Nicholson hit an RBI single to left, and that was all for Komline. Jack Braswell came on in relief, and allowed a single to Colin Newcomb, which drove in a run to make it 9-3, then he got Callanan to fly out to center to end it.

Ridge added one more run in the bottom of the sixth.

But Bridgewater still had some life in the top of the seventh. Michael Labosco singled in between a line out and a strikeout, leaving Kelly at the plate as their last hope. But he extended the game with a walk, and Price doubled to make it 10-4. Stephen Pikulin followed with a single to center to score another run, and Josh Moore got hit by a pitch, putting runners at first and second for Rible, who hit a hard liner to second, stopped by Grob on a short hop instead of in the air. But there was no one to throw to, as the first baseman Paul also had tried for it. That made it 10-6, bringing in Price, but Komline ended up flying out to center to end it.

Komline took the loss, allowing nine runs on eight hits to fall to 3-5, while the win went to Romer in relief, who improves to 6-2.

Bridgewater-Raritan travels to Ridge Wednesday for North 2, Group 4 semis, rubber match between Panthers and Red Devils, with trip to a title game on the line

The first meeting between Ridge and Bridgewater-Raritan this year was a 4-3 win for the Panthers, the second was a 4-3 win for the Red Devils.

Which means the rubber match between the two, Wednesday afternoon up in the Somerset Hills, should be a doozy.

Fifth-seed Bridgewater-Raritan will play top-seed Ridge at 4 pm at Hall Field in Basking Ridge in the North Jersey, Section 2, Group 4 semifinals of the NJSIAA state tournament, with a trip to the championship game on the line. And you can hear the game live on Central Jersey Sports Radio, with Mike Pavlichko on the call. Pregame is set for 3:45 pm, with first pitch at 4:00. Click here to listen.

In the first of two between the teams, it was Bridgewater-Raritan rallying for four runs in the sixth, benefitting from a bases loaded walk that brought in one run, and a balk that brought in another. In the second, Ridge trailed led 1-0 heading into the sixth, then gave up three in the top of the inning. But they clawed back with a run in the bottom to cut it to 3-2, tied it with a run in the seventh, then won it on a Toby Nicholson walk-off single in the gap in the bottom of the eighth.

For the Panthers, the season has been a challenge, having not brought back much in the “returning starter” department. Bridgewater started the year 1-5, but has played about .500 ball since, coming in at 13-16, a misleading number that belies that fact they play in one of the toughest divisions in the state.

Both Immaculata and Ridge had been ranked at various points this year, the three of the four teams in this section’s semifinals are from the Skyland Delaware, with third-seed Watchung Hills visiting two-seed Bayonne this afternoon in the other semi game. (That one starts at 4:30 pm.)

Ridge, meanwhile, comes in at 17-10, and got off to a red-hot start at 11-1, before dropping five in a row that included a pair against Immaculata, one against perennial contender North Hunterdon, the loss to the Panthers, and defending Central Jersey Group 4 champion Hillsborough.

But in their first two games on the state tournament, they’ve won twice by the ten-run rule. They took a 13-3 win over 16-seed Barringer on a walk-off in five innings, scoring five in their final at bat, then blanked Phillipsburg 10-0 in six, walking it off with three in their final at bat. That leaves Ridge outscoring its opponents 23-3 in the state tournament.

Bridgewater has done similarly, though. They topped 12-seed Plainfield in the opening round 11-0 in five, then won at four-seed JP Stevens 10-0 in six, scoring the final run to kick in the mercy rule in the top of the sixth.

This one probably won’t be decided that way, but with long-time rivals going at it instead of two teams that may not be familiar with each other from different conferences, expect a tight one, with a little extra juice – a championship game-type atmosphere.

Ace starter Stieglitz is gone, but Ridge baseball has plenty back to be back in the thick of things again in 2026

Aidan Stieglitz is a special ballplayer. The starter dominated for Ridge last season, going 9-3 in 13 appearances with a 0.77 ERA and 99 strikeouts, and was named the Central Jersey Sports Radio Somerset County Player of the Year.

You don’t just replace a player like that.

But there are enough returnees for the Red Devils that head coach Tom Blackwell is confident his team can be right back in the thick of things this season, even if last year fell just a little bit short.

In 2025, Ridge shared the Skyland Conference Delaware Division title with Immaculata, lost to the Spartans in the Somerset County Tournament title game, and reached the North 2, Group 4 finals, where they lost to Westfield.

Oh, so close, on all three goals for the season. Just missed them.

Now is a chance to make it payoff.

The pitching staff may not exactly be starter by committee, but it might be high school baseball’s version of money ball: using a few different guys – Lucas Liston, Jake Dolan, Casey Kucerka, Dmitri Romer, Andy Yuan – all to get more innings, and maybe combine their production to get what they got last year for Stieglitz.

And hey, with pitch count limits, maybe spreading the pain among opponents will work out even better?

Ridge will enter the season with the No. 3 ranking in the Bellamy & Son Paving Top Ten – right behind GMC Tournament champion St. Joseph-Metuchen and Immaculata … and part of the reason why is the offense.

The heaviest hitters in the lineup return, with seniors like Jake Dolan (.429, 25 RBI, 3 HR), Toby Nicholson (.296, 8 RBI) and Dan Rafanello (.417) and the junior Kucerka (.258, 15 RBI) are back, and others will move in and fill in any gaps.

No doubt all hands will need to be on deck. The Spartans aren’t going anywhere, Bridgewater-Raritan is looking at a bounceback year, Hillsborough is coming off a sectional title, and that’s just the Delaware Division.

Ridge was Somerset County’s only team to win 20 ore more games last season, but with a few more this year, they may have to slide over some of that hardware in the trophy case to make room for more.

Click below to hear Ridge baseball coach Tom Blackwell talk about the Red Devils’ upcoming 2026 season with Central Jersey Sports Radio’s Mike Pavlichko:

Top-seed Ridge drops back-and-forth affair to Westfield, 9-6, in North 2, Group 4 final

by Nick Hart

Westfield may have only scored runs in two innings, but it was runs in bunches for the Blue Devils, who used a five-run second inning and a four-run fifth to take down top-seeded Ridge, 9-6, in the North Jersey, Section 2, Group 4 final Thursday in Basking Ridge.

After a quick top half of the first inning, it seemed as though Ridge would do as it did all season long throughout this one, rely on the pitching to shut down the opposition.

The momentum from the top half of the first quickly shifted to offensive momentum for the Red Devils, who got their first two runners of the frame on via a pair of walks. After a flyout and yet another walk, Ridge loaded the bases looking to break the game open early.

Casey Kucerka was next to bat and roped a line drive right at the second baseman, who threw the ball to first, looking for the inning-ending double play, but threw it up the line, allowing Kieran Callanan to score the game’s first run.

Despite conceding a run in the previous inning, the Blue Devils answered back in a big way in the top of the second.  Westfield sent nine batters to the plate, with six reaching base safely on a mix of walks, hit-by-pitches and some timely hitting.

Four different players recorded an RBI in the inning for the Blue Devils, punctuated by a two-out 2-RBI single off the bat of Jake Alfano, to take a 5-2 lead.

But once again, walks hurt Westfield, as Matt Bober worked a full count base on balls with two outs in the bottom of the fifth to bring the top of the order for the Red Devils.

Callanan got himself ahead in the count and ripped an RBI double into the outfield to cut into the lead, but was later thrown out at third trying to advance on a wild pitch to end the inning.

Kucerka came on in relief of Lucas Liston in the top of the third and retired the side in order to send his team back up to the plate.

It was again the free passes that Ridge took advantage of in the bottom of the third as Jake Dolan worked a walk and later stole second. With a runner on second to start the inning, the Red Devils did not even need to record a hit to bring the runner home, scoring him on back-to-back groundouts.

After another clean inning from Kucerka, including two punchouts, Ridge found themselves in striking distance, down 5-3 heading into the bottom of the fourth inning.

The Red Devils were able to get traffic on the basepaths yet again with a pair of singles. After a fielder’s choice and a strikeout, Ridge needed some two-out magic to take the lead.

With the top of the order back up, Callanan poked an RBI double to cut the deficit to 1 run. That brought up Dolan, who mashed a 2-RBI triple into the outfield to cap off a 4-run inning to take the lead heading into the back half of the game.

Kucerka worked himself into some trouble in the top of the fifth inning, loading the bases with a hit-by-pitch and a pair of walks that ultimately ended his outing.

Dolan was the next pitcher out of the bullpen, with a tall task ahead of him: work out of a bases-loaded jam with the heart of the Blue Devils’ lineup coming up.

Pete Cabrales was the first to greet Dolan and hit an infield single to push across a run and tie the game at 6-6.

Dolan struck out the next batter he faced as he looked to limit the damage but Westfield had other ideas. The next three batters each reached base, with RBI singles from Aaron Ives and Andrew Digregorio and an RBI walk by Anthony Bulger to cap off a 4-run inning, which gave the Blue Devils a 9-6 lead.

Despite stepping on the mound in the fourth inning and giving up 3 runs, James Statler settled in for Westfield and completely shut down Ridge’s offense in the final stretch of the game.

From the fifth inning on, Statler surrendered just two base runners, one a walk and one a single, while striking out four batters on his way to the victory.

On the other hand, the pitching that was so reliable for the Red Devils all year had a tough go of things. As a group, the pitching staff gave up 9 runs on six hits, four walks and four hit-by-pitches in the sectional final game.

The loss leaves Ridge 20-7, with one more game scheduled to end the season Friday against New Providence.

Stieglitz sparkles – again – and throws complete game shutout over Bridgewater-Raritan to send top-seed Ridge into North 2, Group 4 semis

Anytime Aidan Stieglitz is on the mound, the Ridge baseball team has a very good chance to win the game.

Red Devils’ head coach Tom Blackwell knows it, so does Bridgewater-Raritan head coach Max Newill.

Then again, his guy – Jack Lanum – also was cruising through this one, a pitchers’ duel between two starters who won their regular season matchups against the other team.

But on this day, the ninth-seeded Panthers’ couldn’t give Lanum any run support on the mound, and top-seed Ridge came away with a 3-0 win in a North 2, Group 4 quarterfinal game heard on Central Jersey Sports Radio Thursday afternoon.

Ridge (19-5) will now play 4th-seed Elizabeth (22-7) in next Tuesday’s sectional semifinals.

A scoreless game through four, Ridge picked up the only run it would need in the fifth. Kieran Callanan led off with an infield hit, deep in the hole to short. Jake Dolan walked, and Quinn Dashefsky’s sac bunt led to a force at third when it died in front of the plate and JR Rosado got the lead runner, Callanan.

But after a fly ball out to left by Ryan Luo, Casey Kucerka singled home the first run of the game.

The damage could have been worse. The inning before – on a single, walk and sac bunt that Sawyer Paul beat out for a base hit – the Red Devils had the bases loaded, but Lanum struck out the next three hitters to escape.

In the sixth, Ridge added two more. Toby Nicholson got hit to start the inning, and after a fly out by Dan Rafanello, then a sac bunt by Matt Bober moving Nicholson to second, he scored when Callanan reached on an error on the throw to first. After Callanan stole second, Dolan doubled to make it 3-1.

Stieglitz allowed just four Panther hits over seven innings, walking one, striking out ten, to improve to 8-3, and drop his ERA further from the 0.98 number he had before the game. Jack Lanum (3-3) took the loss, as Bridgewater – the defending Group 4 champ beset by injuries all year – finished its season at 7-18.
