Brearley pulls away from South Hunterdon for 21-0 road win, third straight victory

Following an 0-10 season, Brearley made a football coaching change for 2025, bringing in alum Elliot Platt.

And after three losses to start the season, making it 15 straight defeats going back to the final game of 2023, all of a sudden the Bears have figured it out and won three straight.

The latest came Friday night all the way out in Lambertville against South Hunterdon, a 21-0 victory that evened their record at 3-3, with winnable games down the stretch against South River, Metuchen and Dayton.

Much of the first half was scoreless. Senior quarterback Joe Squillaro got the Bears on the board with a five-yard touchdown run just 31 seconds before the half, and Brearley took a 7-0 lead into the locker room.

Their lock down defense against a physical Eagles squad – now 0-5 – continued in the second half, while two more scores in the third quarter gave Brearley some breathing room.

Senior Matthew Resende ran one in out of the wildcat just 17 seconds into the half, and Squillaro ran in another three-yard score with 7:26 to go in the third.

Phillipsburg and Aquinas still 1 and 2 in Marcus Borden’s Week 4 Big Central Top Ten… plus rankings for BCC West, Middlesex and Union Counties

My Friday night game saw St. Thomas Aquinas improve to 4-1, continuing their dominance in league play by winning their 34th consecutive Big Central Conference game versus a talented Elizabeth squad, 35-21.

Like two heavyweight boxers who traded punches in a highly-anticipated matchup , Elizabeth took the first shot on the opening kickoff with senior placekicker David Lazo recovering his own kick.

The Minutemen would then proceed to drive down the field mixing the run and pass for a little over five minutes in the the first quarter but the Trojans forced a fumble at their eight-yard line ending the Elizabeth scoring threat.

After a short three-yard jab by running back Ian Roberts, the senior speedster followed up with a 89-yard body blow as he raced down the Homecoming sideline putting Aquinas up 7-0 at 5:56 in the first quarter.

Once again, Elizabeth would mix the run and pass, hoping to limit the touches for the Aquinas’ high octane offense. However, they were forced to punt with just eight seconds remaining in the first quarter.

Aquinas needed just two plays before sophomore quarterback Zymere Weaver would land a haymaker on the Elizabeth defense, as he rolled right and cut back left down the visitor sideline for a 78-yard touchdown run and subsequent two-point conversion, extending the Trojan lead to 15-0 at the 10:58 mark of the second quarter.

On the ensuing Elizabeth drive junior quarterback A’rique Fleming would look to land a few punches of his own with quick passes and his own body shots as he punished would-be tacklers while methodically moving the chains into the red zone. Fellow classmate running back Jamiir Gregory would then finish the flurry with a 10-yard touchdown run at 6:04 in the second quarter closing the gap to 15-7.

Aquinas wasted little time regaining a two-score advantage with consecutive combos by Roberts, the second a 74-yard jaunt for his second touchdown and a 21-7 lead after the failed two-point conversion.

Neither team threatened before halftime as they headed to their locker room to make halftime adjustments.

Elizabeth looked poised to score, coming out after halftime, as the Minutemen marched down the field in four plays into the red zone. It was, however, a jarring hit by linebacker Dante Jennings that caused the Elizabeth ball carrier to cough up the ball into the arms of Anwar Witherspoon, who took it to the house for a score. But the play was called back due to defensive holding.

Aquinas’ Weaver and company wasted little time as the the nifty signal caller hit a wide open Tristan Bester on a 76-yard toss down the middle of the field for a 28-7 lead at 8:31 in the third quarter.

With neither team wanting to kick deep to the opposition’s returners, Aquinas was forced to re-kick after the first squib kick went out of bounds. The second attempt bounced directly into the hands of Eric Cespedes, who took it near the Aquinas sideline across the field to the visitor’s side and back across the grain to the Aquinas 11-yard line.

Three consecutive runs with the last a six-yard dive into the end zone by Fleming at 6:17 remaining in the third quarter brought the Minutemen closer making it Aquinas 28, Elizabeth 14.

Elizabeth would try to recover the ensuing onside kick with Lazo being called for illegal touching.

Aquinas would get the ball near midfield and adeptly mix the run and pass setting up Witherspoon for a 13-yard Wildcat touchdown run as he burst up the middle blasting his way through two Elizabeth tacklers for a commanding 35-14 lead with 2:58 remaining in the third period.

Once again, Elizabeth’s returner – this time Qua’Yon Williams – nearly returned the kickoff for a score, but a penalty moved the ball back to midfield. The quarter would end with Elizabeth still driving and Fleming scoring on a 14-yard run with 10:30 remaining in the game and the Trojans up 35-21.

St. Thomas would milk the clock advancing the ball down field and coming up a half yard short of a touchdown on fourth down.

Elizabeth – being down two scores – would valiantly try to score quickly, but the Trojans prevent defense and constant pressure proved too much for the visitors as the final horn sounded, giving St. Thomas their fourth win of the season.

Roberts, Weaver help No. 4 St. Thomas Aquinas past Elizabeth, 35-21, extending Big Central record win streak to 34 games

To do what St. Thomas Aquinas has done over the last several years, everyone needs to contribute.

That was on display in last week’s 57-45 thriller over Franklin, and it was on display Friday night in North Edison, where the No. 4 Trojans beat Elizabeth 35-21, extending their Big Central record conference winning streak to 34 games.

St. Thomas (4-1) got two long touchdown runs from Ian Roberts – 89 and 74 yards – a 13-yard touchdown run from Anwar Witherspoon out of the wildcat, and a 76-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Zymere Weaver to Tristan Bester, while Weaver also ran in a 78-yard TD in the first half.

Arique Fleming had two touchdown runs for the Minutemen (2-3), who visit No. 6 Bridgewater-Raritan next week.

St. Thomas will play Paramus Catholic (1-4) in a non-conference home game next Friday night.

No change in Marcus Borden’s Week 3 Big Central Top Ten… plus rankings for BCC West, Middlesex and Union Counties

My Friday night game saw Sayreville improve to 4-0 on the season for the first time since 2018 when they beat Williamstown to capture the NJSIAA Central/South Bowl Championship at MetLife Stadium, finishing that season at 11-1.

The Bombers raced out to a 21-0 lead over visiting Hillsborough as senior running back Shaun Jackson scored on runs of seven, 76 and three yards, while the defense held the Raiders in check for the first half in front of the Red, White and Blue clad hometown Bombers fans, celebrating a U.S.A. theme and their Class of 2025 Hall of Fame Inductees.

Hillsborough came out for the second half with a renewed sense of urgency and immediately got back in the game with a huge pass from senior quarterback Devon Khurana to fellow classmate Hameed Kamari which set up a Andrew Schwarz three-yard touchdown at 9:52 in the third quarter, making the score 21-7.

The Raiders defense would force Sayreville to punt with 3:20 left in the third quarter. They would mix the run and the pass moving the ball to midfield. Schwarz would then pick up a fourth-and-one on a run to his left towards the visitors sidelines.

After another Schwarz short gain and the clocking running down to the close out the third quarter, Khurana ran a play action pass, hitting a leaping Jayden Carter on a post pattern, who would then outrun the Bombers to pay dirt closing the gap to 21-14 to start the fourth quarter.

On their ensuing drive Sayreville would look to run the ball and limit the opportunities for Hillsborough. With the clock reading 6:47 remaining in the game, Sayreville would take a timeout facing a fourth down and one on the Raiders 46-yard line.

The visiting Raiders would be up for the challenge stopping the Bombers short of the line to gain.

Hillsborough would methodically run the ball with their workhorse Schwarz and mixing in short passes getting to the Bombers 29-yard line with an injury timeout called with three minutes and 56 ticks remaining in regulation.

Schwarz would carry to ball inside and outside down to the Bomber 20-yard line with Hillsborough facing a fourth down and five while there was an injury timeout with 2:40 left on the clock.

When play resumed, Khurana would hit Sanjay Mills who ran a stop route and was tackled by linebacker Chase Barnes and safety Shaun Jackson close to the line to gain.

My video footage from the game verified that the ball was short of the first down and it was the Bombers’ ball.

Hillsborough would use its remaining timeouts hoping to get another opportunity to possess the ball. Jackson would break a huge run cutting back towards the home team’s sideline while getting knocked out off bounds inside the Raiders ten-yard line.

After a few penalties on the offense, Jackson would cap the scoring with his fourth rushing touchdown of the night making the final score 28-14 and a 4-0 start in the Bombers second home game of the season.

Sayreville improves to 4-0 for first time since 2018 state title season as Bombers hang on for 28-14 home win over Hillsborough

If anyone doubted Sayreville’s 3-0 start, they probably shouldn’t now.

Against a good, but struggling, Hillsborough team Friday night, the Bombers earned a hard fought 28-14 win, hanging on after taking a 21-0 lead into the second half.

Runningback Shaun Jackson started things off with 7:44 to go in the first quarter with a seven-yard touchdown run to make it 8-0, then came back 49 seconds into the second quarter with a long, 76-yard scamper down the left sideline. He added another from three yards out just before the half to make it 21-0 Bombers.

But Hillsborough got its offense together in the second half. On the opening possession, following a big catch by Hameed Kamara, Andrew Schwarz punched in the Raiders’ first score from three yards out at 9:52 of the third quarter.

After forcing a punt, the Raiders would reach the end zone again at the end of the third quarter on a Devon Khurana TD pass to Jayden Carter to get within a score.

Then, the Sayreville defense tightened. After a late stop, “Action Jackson” did it again, putting an exclamation point on the win with a 20-yard touchdown run with 1:55 to go to make it 28-14.

The Bombers are now 4-0, and its their best start since 2018, when they went 11-1 – their lone loss coming in the regular season to Piscataway – when they won the Central Jersey Group 5 title over North Brunswick, and then got a “Miracle at Met Life,” beating Williamstown 14-7 to win the South Jersey Group 5 regional bowl game, when Connor Holmes fell on a Braves’ fumble in the end zone with 41-seconds to put them ahead.

Next week, they host 0-4 North Brunswick.

Hillsborough, meanwhile, drops to 1-3 for the first time since 2016, with No. 1 Phillipsburg (3-0) coming to town next week, followed by a visit to Westfield.

Phillipsburg wins 750th game, remains No. 1 in Marcus Borden’s Week 2 Top Ten… plus rankings for BCC West, Middlesex and Union Counties

If anyone was wondering who would pick up the the reins of the Phillipsburg football program after being hit hard by graduation this past June, fear not Stateliner fans, the cupboard is not bare!

In a dominant performance at Hunterdon Central this past Friday, a packed house at Stewart Field found out how Phillipsburg’s defense would force the Red Devils to punt just 1:05 into the game, then score on a Sam Dech 11-yard run after a faking punt on their first series.

The Stateliners would race out to a 34-7 halftime lead with Dech scoring again and fellow backfield mate Zihyan McGurn scoring on two long runs while sophomore quarterback Dominic Bracco found Jaysen Blacknall on a deep strike over the middle.

Dech would score two more times in the third quarter with a running clock as he and the starters were relegated to cheering on their second team brothers on offense and defense in the final stanza. The backups put the finishing touches on a 55-14 victory which should send a clear message to their future opponents: WE DIG!

Saturday afternoon’s game between the Roselle Rams and the Metuchen Bulldogs was ultimately decided in the final three minutes of the contest.

Metuchen trailed 12-7 in the fourth quarter, forcing the visiting Rams to punt with 6:02 remaining in the game. They would begin their drive at the Roselle 45-yard line.

After a short run the Bulldogs took to the air along the Roselle sideline while getting first down by a pass interference call on the Ram’s defender. On the very next play the Roselle defender was called for defensive holding as Metuchen took to the air again.

Metuchen would milk the clock running on four consecutive plays with quarterback Cam Hayes-Durina getting a first down to the five-yard line. A counter play to Josiah Bourne would get the ball to the one-yard line with 1:49 on the clock.

Bourne would not get up and the training staff would work on comforting the senior running back, placing his leg in an air cast. Both teams were at their sidelines until Josiah was loaded on a stretcher and wished well by his teammates. The game would resume after a brief warm-up by both squads.

Metuchen would line-up at the Roselle 1-yard line as the signal for play allowed the Bulldogs to let the clock run down while Hayes-Durina would bully his way into the end zone, putting the Bulldogs up 13-12 with 1:20 remaining in the game.

Roselle would go offsides on the point after attempt allowing the home team to go for a two-point conversion, which would force the Rams to score a touchdown or kick a field goal to tie the game. But Metuchen would fail to cross the goal line as the Rams were up to the challenge.

Roselle was ready for the squib kick and took the ball around their forty-five yard line. After an incomplete pass, the Rams would run a quick screen to Raekwon Anderson who would get the ball to the Metuchen 35 yard line.

After another incomplete pass, Anderson would catch an out route from quarterback Deion Nelson, getting the ball out of bounds. Roselle would call a timeout with 43 seconds on the clock.

The Rams would run a screen to their sideline getting out of bounds with :27 left in the game and the ball on the Metuchen 19-yard-line. Nelson would then loft a prayer to Anderson on a fade pattern to the end zone with two Bulldog defenders in position to intercept the ball.

The Rams’ junior receiver went up and maintained his focus on the ball as it was tipped into his hands while he got both feet down for the touchdown resulting in a wild celebration on the Roselle sideline.

With 18 seconds remaining on the clock, the Rams two-point attempt would fail, keeping the score 18-13. A penalty would allow the Rams to squib the ball down the field with senior Kevin Sanchez recovering the fumbled kick, securing Roselle’s first win of the season.

Roselle rallies in final minute on Anderson’s brilliant TD grab; Rams take Saturday afternoon tussle at Metuchen, 18-12

There might not have been a lot of scoring in the Brainy Boro, but Roselle made the key plays it needed to down the stretch in an 18-12 win at Metuchen Saturday afternoon.

Rams’ junior Raekwon Anderson caught the game-winning touchdown pass at the goal line against double coverage, pulling it almost out of thin air after both defenders got a hand on it, then turned into the end zone to put his team up 18-12 with just 18 seconds to go.

And even then, it wasn’t quite over. Roselle’s kickoff to Metuchen went deep, but it went off of Matt Jelleme’s hands, and the Rams’ Kevin Sanchez jumped on it to seal the win with just 13 ticks remaining on the clock.

Anderson got Roselle on the scoreboard at 9:47 of the first quarter with a touchdown catch, but the Rams would only have a 6-0 lead after their two-point try failed. Metuchen knotted the score with a one-yard run by Cam Hayes-Durina with 3:12 to go in the second quarter, but they got the extra point to go up 7-6, a score that would hold through the final horn of the first half.

In the third, Quarterback Deion Nelson then found Shymir Burgess with seven second left in the third to go up 12-7, but with 1:20 left in the game, a one-yard run by Hayes-Durina put the Bulldogs up 13-12, leaving Roselle in need of a late score to survive.

Indeed. they even survived a big sack with the ball just inside the 50 by Metuchen’s Kyle McPartlan. But the drive continued, and eventually led to Anderson’s heroics, his second TD of the day putting Roselle up for good.

Somerville Student Section

Old Bridge moves up; Bridgewater-Raritan, Hunterdon Central, St. Joseph-Metuchen join Marcus Borden’s Week 1 Top Ten… plus rankings for BCC West, Middlesex and Union Counties

We are fully underway in the Big Central, with every team playing in Week One, as fifteen teams who did not start the season in Week Zero made their debut.

This past Friday, I was in Somerville for the clash between the Pioneers and the Cougars of Cranford. Both teams were hit heavy by graduation and were still putting the pieces to the puzzle together with a new cast of underclassmen and a few seniors who were returning with game experience.

Cranford would get on the board first as junior quarterback Aiden Capizzi found fellow classmate John Fiore Jr. on a five-yard touchdown pass after an 8:12 long drive in the first quarter for a 6-0 advantage.

Somerville wasted little time in taking the lead 7-6 after a 42-yard burst to the end zone by senior Aidan Vesuvio-Bush with 8:55 left in the second quarter.

Both teams traded punts as the defenses stiffened up and it seemed the Pioneers would punt once more with 55.7 seconds before halftime after a Cranford sack and a stop on a third down run.

Cougar senior Joseph Acinapura would block the Somerville punt and return in for a score as Cranford went in at halftime with a 12-7 lead.

Vesuvio-Bush would give the Pioneers a 15-12 lead with 6:30 to go in the third quarter with his three-yard score in the Wildcat and subsequent two-point conversion from the same formation.

Somerville would add to its lead when Vesuvio-Bush would score once more on a one-yard run adding to his final tally of 182 total yards on the night. The PAT failed making it 21-12 with about seven minutes remaining in the game.

Cranford would have one more opportunity to close the gap as they had third and goal on the Pioneer five-yard line. With Somerville junior defensive end Nikhai Smith pressuring the quarterback, sophomore James Hampton intercepted the errant pass taking it 103 yards to pay dirt while helping his team to improve to 2-0 in the early season.

On Saturday, Hillside faced visiting Bernards in first-year head coach Isa Abdul-Quddus’ debut at Conant Street Park.

The visiting Mountaineers would get on the board first. Junior quarterback Nolan Ryan would find senior running back Logan Stevens on a swing pass towards the Bernards bench as he sidestepped several Comet defenders and sprinted to the end zone for a 25-yard score with 7:29 left in the first quarter.

Hillside would threaten with Kamari Robinson running the ball and quarterback Jayden Ashford mixing in the pass. The Comets would miss a 35-yard FG attempt late in the first quarter.

Bernards would add to its lead with a 37-yard field goal by junior Daniel Nagy-Lewis with 6:09 to go before halftime as there was a storm brewing behind the Hillside home side bleachers.

Kamari Robinson stepped up his game as the the physical shifty back would score on a 14-yard run play with two minutes and five second before halftime and closing the gap to 10-7.

Both teams would intercept passes with Bernards taking a knee to end the half up 10-7.

With the game being called due to heavy rain and multiple lightening strikes, it was decided to resume play on Sunday at 11 a.m. Unfortunately I was unable to attend the finale as I was in Brick for a 7U tackle game at 9 a.m. But the Mountaineers closed it out, winning 24-14.

Cranford strikes first, but No. 2 Somerville finishes off Cougars, extending Pioneers’ regular season win streak to 12

Cranford may have gotten on the board first, and had a lead at halftime, but the final 24 minutes belonged to Somerville.

The Pioneers got three touchdowns from senior Adian Vesuvio-Bush to get past visiting Cranford, 28-12, Friday night at Brooks Field in Somerville.

John Fiore – the son of former Elizabeth, Spotswood and Montclair coach John Fiore – scored the game’s first touchdown in the first quarter, putting the Cougars up 6-0, but they missed the extra point.. Vesuvio-Bush answered with a 42-yard touchdown run in the second to go up 6-7, but Cranford answered back by blocking a Pioneer punt, and bringing it back 32-yards for a touchdown.

The Cougars went for two, but the pass was incomplete, and they led 12-7 at the break.

After that, the Pioneers took over.

Vesuvio-Bush scored from two-yards out in the third quarter, and ran in a two-point conversion to put Somerville up by an even field goal, 15-12. He then ran another in from a yard out in the fourth to make it 21-12; the kick failed. And then, for insurance, sophomore James Hampton picked off a potential touchdown pass a couple yards deep into the end zone, and brought it all the way across the opposite goal line to secure a 28-12 victory.

The Pioneers – who are 2-0 and are on a 12-game regular season win streak – will play host to Montgomery (1-1) next Friday night, while Cranford (0-2) will play its third straight road game to start the season, visiting Carteret (1-0) next Friday night.

Marcus Borden unveils his Top Ten after Week 0 play in the Big Central

I had the pleasure to cover two BCC teams that played on Friday and Saturday at Rowan University in The Battle at the Beach.

On Friday, Hillsborough faced Washington Twp. in a Group 5 matchup with the 2024 state semifinalist Minutemen, who lost to powerhouse Toms River North, which finished 14-0 last season and won its third straight Group 5 title.

The senior-laden South Jersey team dominated the Raiders 43-12 sending a message to their future opponents that their goal is to win each week as they look to get back to the playoffs so they can make another championship run.

Saturday, Old Bridge faced Cedar Creek in a late-afternoon battle of heavy weights, which was a seven-point game late in the fourth quarter until senior quarterback Brody Nugent somehow escaped the grasp of a plethora of Pirates and raced to the end zone. That made the score 21-7 with about three minutes remaining in the game.

Nugent scored three times and was named MVP and “Hat” winner by local sportswriter Mark Trible, host of the South Jersey Football Frenzy Show.
