On the heels of a ’23 sectional title, and two straight finals berths, Bernards looks to keep momentum going

The Bernards football program – for a good part of Jon Simoneau’s 17 seasons as head coach – has been very good. But the last two years have brought unprecedented success.

The Mountaineers won their first state sectional title of the playoff era in 2023, beating Lakeland at home to win the North 2, Group 2 title. Last year, they went to the finals as well, but fell to Shabazz.

Add to that a couple of Patriot Gold Division titles – they’ve won three straight and shared titles in 2021 and 2020 – and the Mountaineers are not a team that rebuilds, they just reload.

The scary part? They don’t have to do much reloading.

On offense, Simoneau had two seniors who combined for just 98 of the team’s nearly 1,700 rushing yards. And while they will lose key seniors like Jack Morra and Max Austin from the receiving corps, the cupboard is far from bare. A total of 13 different receivers caught passes last year, and seven are back.

Defensively, they’ll still hav Thomas Diemar, the school’s all-time sack leader with 20 in his career, ten each over the last two seasons, a big part of the Mountaineers’ success.
