For the first time since its last championship – the culmination of a tremendous nine title, 12-year run under Jim Muldowney – the Edison baseball team is back in the finals of the Greater Middlesex Conference tournament that now bears the late coach’s name.

In a great pitches’ duel, 11-seed Edison’s Connor Muprhy got the better of 10-seed Middlesex’s Chris Kozak for a 3-0 semifinal win in Saturday’s semifinals at East Brunswick Magnet School, heard live on Central Jersey Sports Radio.

No one scored and there were few baserunners until the Eagles got on the board in the sixth on a two-RBI double by Connor Murphy that he extended to a three-base hit when the throw to get the second runner at the plate sailed to the backstop.

Edison (13-9) got an insurance run in the seventh on a double by Brody Ferrer.

The win went to Connor Murphy, who went the distance, striking out four and allowing just two hits and three walks. He’s now 5-2. The loss went to Kozak, who falls to 3-4.

Edison will take on the winner of the second semifinal between 5-seed St. Joseph and 8-seed Spotswood in next Saturday’s 2 pm final at East Brunswick Magnet, which can be heard on Central Jersey Sports Radio.
