Always a battle, No. 5 Gill St. Bernard’s boys hold on for 78-73 win at No. 2 Rutgers Prep

It could be the opening game of the season, the Somerset County Tournament Final, or any time in between, but when Rutgers Prep and Gill St. Bernard’s play a boys’ basketball game against each other, it’s always interesting, always intense, always a “war,” as Gill coach Mergin Sina likes to put it.

Even in a game where the Knights had nearly doubled up the Argonauts after the first eight minutes of play, anyone in the warmth of the gym on a frigid winter evening knew it was far from over.

The Argonauts heated up and rallied in the second, with a furious finish punctuated by a pair of treys from Jacob Canton, and pulled to within two, at 38-36, heading into the locker room at halftime.

That was enough, though, to make Gill put the pedal back to the metal, and the fifth-ranked Knights – who never lost the lead – came away with a 78-73 win over the No. 2 Argonauts in Somerset Thursday.

Sophomore Kieran Quinn finished with 19 points to lead GSB, and he scored inside, outside and from the foul line, going 3-for-3 from the stripe – when he was fouled shooting a trey in the fourth quarter – and hitting twice from beyond the arc.

Gill is now 7-2, 4-0 in the Skyland Conference Delaware Division, and snapped a two-game losing streak with the victory.

Sophomore Jacob Canton finished with 28 for Prep, which fell to 5-5, 3-1 in the Skyland Delaware.

The two will meet again February 4th in Peapack-Gladstone, but that will be well after the Somerset County Tournament is seeded in late January.
