n boys’ basketball, there are five members of the 1,000 point club in the Central Jersey Sports Radio coverage area, but many more could join the ranks this season.
Aiden Derkack of top-ranked Colonia was the first, and so far he’s the only one to have cracked the mark this early in the season. He did it in the middle of a 32 point performance against Piscataway on December 19th, as heard live on CJSR.
And of those that are already in the club, a few are close to school records as well.
Timothy Christian’s Jalen Fleming is 227 points away from Warren Fitch’s boys’ record of 1,812, set in 1992. Derkack – just a junior – will almost assuredly pass Nick Smith’s 1,672 mark set in 2005, whether he does it this year or next.
And Bound Brook’s Jackson Morrison is 308 points away from the boys’ record. We’ll see the Crusaders next Saturday on CJSR, hosting Somerville at 1 pm.
Alex Grospe of South River – the state’s top returning scorer – may not have enough games to set the all-time South River mark. He’s 733 away from Deon Jackson’s mark of 2,332, with a pace that would get him to 2,079 if the Rams play 26 games as they did last year. (They played 30 in 2022-23, when they made a deep run in the states and went to the Central Jersey Group 2 finals.)
Here are the five current active members of the boys’ 1,000 point club from the area, including statistics on NJ.com as of games played January 3rd. All are seniors except those marked with an asterisk.

As for others nearing 1,000 points, here’s a look at those within 350 points of the milestone. All are seniors, except those with an asterisk, who are juniors. There are no sophomores on the list.
