The 5th-seeded Monroe Falcons are in the GMC Tournament semifinals for the second straight year, and they’ll meet four-time defending champion and top-seed St. Thomas Aquinas in Tuesday’s semifinals.
Monroe (16-8) won a low-scoring game over fourth-seed North Plainfield, 38-29 in Spotswood Saturday afternoon. North Plainfield falls to 18-5. Evangelina Francisco was the only Falcon in double figures, scoring 11, while Sophia Rivas chipped in eight. And they held North Plainfield’s leading scorer Layla Gutierrez to just two points.
The Falcons led most of the way, up 11-6 after one quarter, and 22-16 at halftime.
Meanwhile, top-seed St. Thomas Aquinas is one step away from the final after a 90-36 win over 8th-seeded Spotswood on the Chargers’ home floor.
The Trojans – who are now 19-7 – won the GMC Tournament in 2019 as Bishop Ahr, then won the next three in 2020, 2022 and 2023 at St. Thomas Aquinas. (There was no full league tournament in 2021 due to the COVID-shortened season.)
