Day two of the Greater Middlesex Conference girls’ basketball tournament saw six of the higher seeded teams win, but North Brunswick and Carteret managed to knock off higher seeds.
The 20th-seeded Lady Raiders got 21 points from Sydney Joseph in a game where they led 13-seed South River for about three quarters with a stellar defensive effort. After holding a 17-14 advantage after one quarter, North Brunswick allowed just 13 points over the final 24 minutes to come away with a 55-27 road win.
It was just their third win of the season, and now the Lady Raiders (3-18) move on to Thursday’s first round, the round of 16, traveling to 4-seed North Plainfield (17-4) for the first meeting between the schools since 2015.
Meanwhile, 18th-seed Carteret (13-8) scored a mild upset over 15-seed South Plainfield, 29-28 on the road. Jahaysia Ledesma led the Ramblers with 10 points, one of only two players in the game who scored in double-figures; Stella Sweeney of South Plainfield also scored ten.
Carteret moves to to play at 2-seed Colonia (16-7) Thursday in their first meeting since January of 2022.
