GMC Tournament baseball final moved to Sunday

Mother Nature has been considerably kind to high school baseball for much of the season, with relatively few exceptions.

But she’s not cooperating for the GMC Tournament Final, at least not entirely.

Greater Middlesex Conference President Mike Pede announced Friday morning that the baseball title game – originally scheduled for 2 pm Saturday at Ray Cipperly Field in East Brunswick – has been moved to Sunday, and one hour earlier, with first pitch now set for 1:00 pm.

You can hear Saturday’s GMC Tournament Final between top-seed and defending champion North Brunswick and third-seed St. Joseph-Metuchen on Central Jersey Sports Radio, driven by Auto Lounge of Edison. Mike Pavlichko and Justin Sontupe will call all the action, with pregame set for 12:30 pm. Click here to listen.

As of 10 am Friday, the Saturday forecast from The Weather Channel called for steady rain in the morning, with showers continuing into the afternoon and a high of 71 degrees with the chance of precipitation around 70 percent. Total rainfall was expected to be around a quarter of an inch.

Compared with a Sunday forecast of 80 with partly cloudy skies, and virtually no chance (3%) of rain, the move was likely an easy one for GMC officials, who were closely monitoring the weather situation all week, according to Pede.

It could, however, affect North Brunswick’s pitching situation for the state tournament. With ace Zack Konstantinovsky getting the start in the final against St. Joe’s, and the game now being on Sunday, he may be limited – if he can go at all – in a potential second round playoff game in Central Jersey Group 4.

St. Joseph is expected to get a first-round bye and not play until Friday, so the Falcons wouldn’t be affected by the move.
