Less than a week ago, South Brunswick was on the wrong end of a no-hitter, falling 1-0 in the GMC Tournament quarterfinals to Monroe on a no-no thrown by junior Lucas White.
On Monday, Vikings senior Joey Tuttoilmondo pitched the third no-hitter of his high school career in a 2-1 win over Allentown that should help improve South Brunswick’s power point standing in Central Jersey Group 4.
It was a key victory over a 13-win Redbirds team from Mercer County that could greatly boost their playoff position.
It also may have been the most bizarre – and dominant – of Joey T’s three no-hitters.
First, the dominant: Tuttoilmondo struck out a career high 20 hitters – all but one of the 21 outs in the game – walking only three.
But one of those walks led to the first of the bizarre parts. It came in the sixth inning, his team up 2-1, and it was the second walk of the game for Chris Whalen of Allentown. He stole second. And then, he came home to score on consecutive balks called on Tuttoilmondo.
Now comes the other bizarre part: South Brunswick doesn’t have a working scoreboard. And since Tuttoilmondo is so locked in on the mound, he thought his team was up only 1-0 at the time. So when he got the final out, he figured his day was done, the score tied at 1-1, and he hoped his team could win in it the bottom of the inning.
That is, until his teammates came streaking out of the dugout to congratulate him.
