Most observers, told that South Brunswick leading scorer Kalani Antoine would be held to just seven points well into the fourth quarter, would not have figured the seventh-seeded Vikings could beat third-seed South River in the GMC Tournament semifinals.
But that’s just what they did.
And it was mainly because of the monster night 6-fooot-6 senior Harmehar Chhabra had: 20 points hitting, key free throws down the stretch, and dishing the ball off on drives to the hoop when he didn’t have a good shot.
Antoine finished with 11, but they didn’t need him as much on this night.
The win puts the Vikings (17-5) in Friday night’s 8 pm semifinal at Monroe Township High School against the winner of the second game Wednesday evening, featuring top-seed St. Thomas Aquinas and fourth-seed St. Joseph-Metuchen.
South River – having an amazing season with a senior-laden ballclub, suffered just its third loss on the season, dropping to 23-3. Senior Jeremy Grospe led the Rams with nine points.
