Somerset County Tournament gets underway, with three girls’, two boys’ teams advancing

The 2023 Somerset County Tournament is underway, with Immaculata, Bernards and Somerville advancing on the girls side, while the Bernards and Bridgewater-Raritan boys were winners. Scroll beyond the recaps for the full slate of Saturday’s second-round action in both brackets:

Girls’ SCT First Round

#10 Somerville 54, #15 Montgomery 25: The Pioneers (13-9) came hot out of the gate and never looked back, leading 13-5 after one quarter, and 28-10 at halftime, never allowing the Cougars more than eight points in any period. Amaya Miller led the home team with 14, while Charlotte Taylor added 13 for Somerville, which now visits 7th-seed Pingry (14-9) on Saturday in the second round. The Lady Mustangs dropped to 9-11 with the loss.

#11 Bernards 54, #14 Manville 12: The story was balanced scoring for the Mountaineers (15-6), who had nine players get in the scoring column, and none putting up more than ten points, with Aletha Reynolds and Sydney Incarnato grabbing team-high honors. Manville (9-11) got a team-best five from Sadie Fleming. Bernards moves on to play at six-seed Mount St. Mary (14-9) in the second round Saturday.

#12 Immaculata 35, #13 Bridgewater-Raritan 24: A low scoring game throughout, the Spartans (11-12) led just 8-4 after the first eight minutes, and 16-3 at the half. Neither team scored double figures in a quarter until both did in the fourth. Immaculata’s Maddie Babula had game-high honors with 13, while Giovanna Drajin had a double-double of 12 points and ten rebounds. The Panthers fell to 1-22 on the year. ‘Lata travels to 5th-seed Franklin (10-11) for a second-round game on Saturday.

Boys’ SCT First Round

#11 Bridgewater-Raritan 53, #14 Manville 37: A tight game most of the way, the Panthers (7-14) increased their 20-17 halftime lead in the third quarter, and pulled away on the strength of a 16-4 run over the final eight minutes. Bryce Pantozzi was the only player in double-figures for BR, while Tyler Kesolitz scored 15 points and earned game-high honors for Manville (11-10). Next up for Bridgewater is a trip to sixth-seed Ridge (17-4) on Saturday in the second round.

#13 Bernards 66, #12 Somerville 51: Bernards led 18-11 after one and 32-21 at the half, in control virtually the whole way against the Pioneers. Junior Gabriel Morales had a career-high 24 points in the win to lead all scorers, while William Frank added 14 points and Ryan Gaglione scored 13 for the Mountaineers (10-13). Somerville got a 22-point night and four treys from Brady Scheier (9-14) in defeat. Bernards’ second round game will be at 5-seed Franklin (14-9) Saturday.

  • #11 Bernards (15-6) at #6 Mount St. Mary (14-9) at 3pm, winner at #3 Watchung Hills

  • #9 Montgomery (11-2) at #8 Bound Brook (18-3) at 1 pm, winner at #1 Rutgers Prep
  • #13 Bernards (10-13) at #5 Franklin (14-9) at 2:30 pm, winner at #4 Hillsborough
  • #11 Bridgewater-Raritan (7-14) at #6 Ridge (17-4) at 1:30 pm, winner at #3 Immaculata
  • #10 Pingry (12-7) at #7 Watchung Hills (11-9) 10 am, winner at #2 Gill St. Bernard’s
