They will meet at least twice this year, both times on the back-end of a girls’/boys’ doubleheader.
Both should be real humdingers, with the potential of a third in the Somerset County Tournament
The first of the two clashes takes place tonight when No. 2 Rutgers Prep (5-3) travels to Gladstone to take on No. 3 Gill St. Bernard’s (5-2) for a game not only critical for the Skyland Conference Delaware Division title, but potentially the top seed in the Somerset County Tournament.
Both teams have prepped themselves with challenging out-of-conference scheduling. For the Argonauts, they lost a game to Bergen Catholic on New Year’s Day, plus two games to Pennsylvania squads before and after Christmas: Devon Prep and Cardinal O’Hara.
Trouble is, while they picked up a win against Neumann Goretti, senior Cameron Piggee got banged up, and is now day-to-day with an ankle. (Although most would take a Piggee at 80-percent over most others.)
The teams have split their last two meetings, with Prep winning a regular season game in February 2020 by six, while Gill won their meeting in last year’s Somerset County Tournament Final 84-63.
This year, though, they go from occasional foes to division rivals, as the Argonauts move up from the Raritan Division to the Delaware.
