Quarterbacks who can run the football bring a whole different dimension to a football team.
That quality is what has helped Brearley get off to its best start in four years, when they went 5-0 to start the 2018 season.
That team ended up 6-3, but this year’s squad has a good chance at running the table in the regular season. They’re averaging 31.2 points per game, and have pitched three shutouts defensively. Their next three opponents are a combined 5-11.
A big reason is senior QB Matt Sims. He’s thrown it almost as much as he’s rushed it, passing for 647 yards and seven touchdowns – with just one interception – while running it 116 times (that’s 23 carries per game) for 751 more yards and another 13 touchdowns.
But all that doesn’t come easy. Sims has worked hard at his game, training in the off season with Coach Matt Bastardi of Elite QB Football Training Academy (a Central Jersey Sports Radio sponsor).

This Friday night, when Brearley visits Highland Park, Sims will try and lead the Bears to their first 6-0 start since they went 11-0 to begin 2015, falling in the North 2 Group 1 title game to Hoboken.
