East Brunswick upset of top-seed Midd South in CJ4 highlights Sunday state playoff action

Perhaps the biggest upset of the day in the NJSIAA public quarterfinal round Saturday happened in Monmouth County, where East Brunswick – one of the hottest teams in the CJSR-area the last few weeks, despite a 12-inning heartbreaking loss to eventual champion North Brunswick in the GMCT semis – knocked off top-seed Middletown South 1-0 in Central Jersey Group 4 quarterfinal action.

And wouldn’t you know it, it sets up a rematch with the Raiders in the sectional semis, Tuesday at Community Park in North Brunswick. The 5th-seeded Raiders topped 4-seed Northern Burlington Saturday, 3-0.

In a game heard on Central Jersey Sports Radio in the North 2, Group 4 semis, Ridge beat Bridgewater-Raritan in the bottom of the seventh. Click here to read a full recap of that game, with postgame reaction.

Somerville, Woodbridge, and Middlesex all advanced to their respective semifinals, while Metuchen, South Amboy, Bound Brook and Colonia all got knocked out.
