GMC Tournament’s first round now entirely wiped out due to weather; all games to be made up Tuesday

A forecast calling for strong, gusty thunderstorms with hail possible Monday afternoon and early evening forced all eight GMC Tournament first round games to be rescheduled to Tuesday. teams rescheduling their opening round games in the 2022 GMC Tournament. Even 12th-seed Metuchen at 5th-seed Woodbridge – originally scheduled for 7 pm – was moved.

Woodbridge is one of few teams in the GMC with lights, and playing Monday would have potentially given them a distinct advantage pitching-wise, if they were to win and play Wednesday. The same goes for Metuchen, a much smaller school, which beat the Barrons in both regular season meetings this year.

There was a try by 9th-seed South Brunswick and 8th-seed South Plainfield, to move their game earlier to 1:00 Monday to try and beat the rain, but the skies opened, and that game was been moved to Tuesday as well.

The move to Tuesday will force some coaches to juggle their pitching plans.

GMC President Mike Pede – the Athletic Director at East Brunswick Tech – has said GMC tournament dates will not be moved at this time. Teams playing on Tuesday will have to play on back-to-back days, with the quarterfinals scheduled for Wednesday at North Brunswick Community Park.

And that would set up tournament games in rapid fire fashion, with the opening round Tuesday, quarterfinals Wednesday, and semifinals Saturday.

The semifinals are scheduled for Saturday at 12 and 2:30 pm at East Brunswick Tech’s Ray Cipperly Field. Central Jersey Sports Radio will have live coverage of both games with Mike Pavlichko and Justin Sontupe calling all the action.

None of the changes should affect the GMC Tournament final, which will be the following Saturday – Memorial Day weekend – at 2 pm at EB Tech.

Pede also said the GMC Invitational – slated to start Tuesday with seven first round games – will go off as planned. The first rounds of the main tournament and invitational traditionally are staggered – much like the league’s regular season – due to availability of umpires.
