Colonia gunning for first GMC Tourney title since 2015, with Pressley leading the way

In the game of “Anything You Can Do, I Can Do Better,” Saivon Pressley usually wins.

That’s sure been the case in the last couple of weeks for the Colonia senior, who has scored at least 21 points in each of his last six games, and is averaging 29 points per game in the Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament games, heading into tonight’s county final.

That’s when third-seed Colonia (21-3) will take on top-seeded St. Thomas Aquinas (25-1) as it looks for its first league title since 2015, when the then-second-seeded Patriots gave top-seeded St. Joeseph-Metuchen its only blemish in a ten year stretch that saw it win nine out of ten GMCT titles.

Colonia was its only defeat in that stretch.

Colonia lost twice this season to St. Thomas Aquinas, by 12 and 14 points. But both games were tight most of the way.

Last year, in the COVID-shortened season that saw the GMC do four-team pods instead of a full-on tournament, these two teams met in the pod that had the top four teams in the league, the Karl-Anthony Towns/Jay Williams pod. And Colonia – designated the two-seed – beat top-seed St. Thomas Aquinas on the Trojans home floor, 80-64.
