Nothing major in the way of upsets in opening round of the Somerset County Tournament

Neither the girls’ nor boys’ sides of the Somerset County Tournament saw anything major in terms of upsets Thursday night, with seven teams on to the second round, to be played Saturday at higher seeds.

The 13th-seeded team beat the 12 in both tournaments, as the Bernards boys beat Somerville 57-46, and the Bridgewater-Raritan girls more than doubled up Somerville 41-20.

In other first-round girls’ action, 9th-seed Ridge beat Manville at home 58-40, 11th-seed Pingry pounded 14th-seed Bernards 64-19, and 10-seed Montgomery cruised past 15-seed North Plainfield 58-25.

In the boys’ tournament, 11-seed Pingry beat 14th-seed Manville 56-41, while 10-seed Bridgewater-Raritan topped 15-seed North Plainfield 57-42.

In the second round, Thursday’s winners will face teams five through eight, all of which got first-round byes.

9-Hillsborough at 8-Immaculata (both had first-round byes)
13-Bernards at 5-Bound Brook
11-Pingry at 6-Franklin
10-Bridgewater-Raritan at 7-Ridge

Girls:
9-Ridge at 8-Immaculata
13-Bridgewater-Raritan at 5-Bound Brook
11-Pingry at 6-Hillsborough
10-Montgomery at 7-Mount St. Mary
